“Disappointing”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

Our friends had recommended the Peninsula Grill to us and usually we agree with their recommendations. Our dinner earlier this week (to celebrate our wedding anniversary), however, was very disappointing in many ways; surprising for such a high class restaurant with a reputation to maintain. All started well when we arrived and we were shown to our table on the patio. Sadly, however, the table was on a slope and with metal chairs without cushions, we became increasingly uncomfortable as dinner progressed. The waiting staff were overly attentive, to the extent of being annoying, especially when they spent time chatting for far too long with other guests and ignoring others who were waiting to be attended to. We were not asked if we would like to start our dinner with a cocktail, which is surprising. The food was ok, but we have eaten far better in Charleston. Sorry, Peninsula Grill; we are sure you usually do better!

“Charming,Great Food and Service”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

Wonderful service, food, and wine list. Intimate bar. Smaller , quieter dinning room where many in Charleston are "tourist" this is feels"local" even during Spring Break. Wonderful ,innovative food and great service. If dinner is too much, go for a great value breakfast,

“Absolutely Wonderful Food and Service”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

As guests at the Planters Inn, we breakfasted daily at the Grill. Absolutely lovely, warm and helpful waitstaff (a member of our party has a gluten allergy and they brought special toast and were knowledgeable in advice on gluten free entrees). The morning breakfast buffet of cereals, fresh fruits, yogurts, pastries and assorted cheeses was a great way to start the day. The walls are upholstered in a taupe crushed velvet above wainscoting and below thick crown moldings - doesn't sound appealing, but it is rich and lovely. Historical portraits and horse prints; really different light fixtures. For dinner, the sauteed scallops (four very large - the size of silver dollars, possibly larger) entree is fabulous; actually, one the best meals I have ever had. Others in my family had the evening special of red grouper which was nicely flavored. Delicious warm bread basket. We tried the coconut cake. Maybe 5 or 6 tiers of cake with a rich vanilla and coconut frosting. A bit too sweet, but if you favor coconut cake, it is certainly worth ordering. Superb food, thoughtful, professional waitstaff and lovely atmosphere. Oh, and a second on a previous visitor's endorsement of the lobster and corn chowder.
