“a wonderful stay”
Reviewed November 12, 2013

Hubby and I just returned from our vacation in Charleston and our accommodations at Zero George Street were one of the highlights. Our room was on the third floor of the main building and it was very clean and nicely appointed. We had a porch just outside our room to enjoy our morning coffee and to wind down with a book before heading out to dinner. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. We parked our car and could walk to everywhere we wished to go. I especially enjoyed the afternoon wine and cheese gathering as I got to meet some very nice fellow travelers. The staff was also very nice and polished.

If you are visiting Charleston because of the beautiful homes and gardens, why not stay at Zero George Street and live in one of them for a few days. I will surely return to this fine establishment on my next trip to Charleston.

Our experience was disappointing. However, we are older (50's - 60's) and have traveled extensively. We asked for a room that was quiet, but had to listen to guests overhead through the night coming and gong, lots of noise walking around in their room above ours. Our room could have used a more through cleaning. Ceiling fan dirty (Ugh!). Footstools at the bottom of the bed had sales tags underneath, but a good several months of dust of them. While it's nice to have a Keurig available in the room we had to ask for K-cups and cream to be replenished - same with Kleenex. This type of thing should be monitored daily. One does not expect this at the rate of over $400/night. All the youngsters running the place brought me back to my collage years. I think they need someone more experienced in over-seeing the management. Heating and a/c issues throughout our stay. Friendly staff, but not experienced enough with experienced travelers. Probably the 30 and under crowd would not have any issues.

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere.

My wife and I recently stayed at the Zero George, I felt I would be doing a severe disservice to fellow trip adviser readers if I did not share our experience at this charming, quaint, stylish and sophisticated boutique hotel that will undoubtedly become a Charleston mainstay. We are young professionals in our thirties and generally stay at the larger luxury resorts - or sleek, sophisticated boutique hotels, depending on the city. The Zero George happens to be in a class of its own, and is the perfect place to stay while in Charleston.

You immediately notice the charm upon your arrival as you walk through the wrought iron gate into a courtyard that is brilliant in it's welcoming simplicity. We were warmly greeted by their polite and attentive staff. They were extremely helpful and answered all our questions regarding places to go, things to see and restaurants to try. Our well appointed room was traditional, yet stylish and felt more like a home than a hotel. The complimentary happy hour included great wine and a delicious assortment of meats and cheeses. We also enjoyed the complimentary European breakfast each morning.

Each of the next three nights we spent at the Zero George were as good as the first. In addition to the wonderful front desk staff, we would be remiss not to mention the former chef turned mixologist, Justin. Not only did he keep our glasses full in the evening with amazing handcrafted cocktails, he was our de facto restaurant/nightlife guide as well. We were also very impressed with Kathryn, the Concierge Manager who was extremely personable and genuinely cared that we were having a great time. Our stay was capped off when we met the owners of the hotel, Dean and Lynn, who were in town and staying at the George. We found them to be accessible, down to earth and intensely interested in our enjoyment and feedback.

We will most certainly be coming back should we find ourselves heading to Charleston again. With it's friendly and attentive service, cozy yet sophisticated style, proximity to Charleston's best restaurants, shops and bars, and the unshakable feeling that staying in a "normal hotel" would just not do Charleston justice…the Zero George is the easy, and only choice.

We loved the Zero George for its old-fashioned charm, its service and the nice people --- both staff and guests. We had a beautiful old room that we walked through a courtyard to reach. The happy hour is fun, and we met a lot of interesting travelers there. The people at the bar and front desk helped with everything, making it easy for us.

It's across the street from the still under construction performing arts center. When that's built it will amazing to stay at Zero George if you're in town for plays or concerts.

In short, the Zero George is a slice of Charleston, quaint, full of old-fashioned beauty, and friendly. Highly recommend!

Very nice boutique hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. Great location in downtown Charleston within walking distance to King and Bay Streets with all of it's shopping and restaurants. Rooms were comfortable and nicely appointed with fairly modern fixtures. Enjoyed the large balconies and courtyard where you could hang out during breakfast (limited selection and not substantial) or during the complimentary wine reception. Very minor delays with help from hotel staff, but nothing that ruined our stay. I don't remember all of the room #s or buildings, but the further you are from Bay Street the quieter it will be. Would definitely recommend this hotel for couples looking to stay in downtown Charleston.

We booked to stay at Zero George for a couple of nights over labor day weekend. We picked it based on the reviews on TA and the style of the property.
Check in was easy and the staff were very friendly. We were welcomed with some chilled flavored water. The room was fantastic. Decorated very well, a little musty but the building is old. The AC worked fantastic which was perfect I spend most of the weekend sweating as it was so humid.
We had a room on the 2nd floor overlooking the courtyard. It had a really nice seating area outside where we would enjoy a glass of wine from the free wine reception.
Breakfast was basic but very good.
It's about a 5 minute brisk walk into town which isn't so bad.
Really glad we chose this hotel and I would strongly recommend it.

Room Tip: I would suggest the 2nd floor

My husband and I just returned from our first trip to Charleston yesterday and I couldn't wait to review this hotel. The property is beautiful, the rooms are spacious and nicely decorated, and the staff is amazing. We loved the walks to and from dinner and shopping because we stumbled upon other gems that we wouldn't have had the chance to discover. It was the perfect hotel for our stay. Twice daily housekeeping is the BUSINESS. Four thumbs up.
