We had Luke as our guide and he was absolutely great. The other couple who was supposed to be in our group cancelled so it was just the two of us. Luke was able to tailor the trip based on tides, weather, our abilities, and cool things he wanted us to see. I would highly recommend this as a Charleston activity for someone looking to enjoy nature and escape downtown for a little.

My husband and I, who are active 30 somethings but totally novice kayakers, had a wonderful time on the marsh tour. We were actually scheduled for the swamp tour, but they emailed us the day before and let us know that the swamp had a lot of mosquitos and gave us the option to switch to the marsh tour. We took their advice and appreciated their flexibility. There were six of us, and Will was our guide. He did a great job describing the history, vegetation, and wildlife we passed. He had answers to every question. The day was beautiful and the kayaking not difficult. We had a great time.

Find time to do this in Charleston - it doesn't matter if you've kayaked before or not. We hadn't and Luke is very cool about that. You get 2 full hours of passionate explanation of the ecology of the river and banks - plus you get to see alligators (apparently it's crocs you should worry about!) and dolphins.

We were lucky that recent heavy rains extended the season for the Blackwater Cypress Swamp tour, so that we were able to enjoy this quiet, peaceful place. Don't worry if you have no experience kayaking..the water is calm and shallow. A little navigation around trees is all that's needed. I didn't expect to learn so much about the local wildlife, environment and history, but Luke, our guide was exceptional. We were lucky enough to have a private tour on a slow midweek day and I'm so glad we did. Book any trip with this company. You will be glad you did.

We found out about kayak tour with Charleston Kayak Company when we were planning our trip to visit Middleton Place. We decided to book the Blackwater Cypress Swamp tour as it seemed to be a unique tour and timing-wise it worked with our schedule.

On the day of the tour, we received a call from Luke our would be guide in the morning to check with us if we still wanted to do the tour considering there was possibility we would have rain in the afternoon. We decided to go ahead with the tour considering that it didn’t look like it would be too heavy, but we appreciate the flexibility and the courtesy call.

We ended up to be the only participants of the tour, so it was quite nice to essentially have a private tour with Luke. He was quite knowledgeable about the history of the land and the unique environment of the cypress swamp. He also made the trip as comfortable as it could be, and gave us pointers in navigating as we were not experts in kayaking.

The experience itself was quite unique, kayaking through the swamp was like going through a different world. Even though we went in December and on a rainy day, it was quite calm and peaceful going through the cypress forest and not too cold that it became uncomfortable. We were out for about three hours, and I think it’s really worth every minute we spent.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this tour for anyone looking for unique experience while visiting Charleston area especially during the winter time.
