Description: Evoking memories of the small-town grocery, executive chef and owner Kevin Johnson has created a gathering place of warmth and familiarity, with a menu based on seasonal ingredients available from local and regional farmers and fishermen he knows and has worked with for many years. The Grocery’s kitchen is stocked with house-made charcuterie and fresh, local fish and seafood, and the restaurant accommodates an in-house canning program to preserve fresh produce for the menu. An extensive cocktail and wine list are available as is craft beer on tap, and a wood-burning oven heightens the cordial atmosphere in the former furniture warehouse.

“Good Food, Pricey, Small Portions”

If you're looking for gourmet quality and a trendy place, The Grocery is great. The food is carefully prepared and presented by wait staff who tell you about the special features of each dish. The atmosphere is like an old grocery with hardwood floors, vintage lighting, and white clapboard walls. As the restaurant fills up, it becomes quite noisy and hard to hear your dinner companions.

The food was pricey and the portions were small, so plan to order appetizers and some side dishes. I think we spent about $100 for the two of us with no alcohol. We did not try dessert.

“Fabulous Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2013

Situated on Cannon Street, just off King, this restaurant is a bit off the beaten path for tourists. It is, however, only a very short, walk from the new Holiday Inn on Meeting Street. My husband and I had made reservations based on their intriguing menu and the fact that they use seasonal and locally grown, prepared, and canned foods. The atmosphere at The Grocery was friendly, the service was excellent, and the food was fabulous. Everything we had was uniquely prepared and absolutely delicious, with interesting combinations of flavors and ingredients, perfectly cooked and seasoned, nothing too rich. We each had a "bite" and a "plate," and then shared a dessert. Their wine selection is very good as well. Charleston is known for its great restaurants, and we have been to many of them, but this was our best dining experience by far. It's rewarding to patronize an establishment that uses locally grown, harvested, and produced food, and doubly rewarding when the food is so delicious. We will be going to eat at The Grocery every time we visit Charleston.

The Groccery has an interesting menu with variety of small plates and appetizers. Great choice for people seeking creative, flavorful food. Atmosphere is cool with walls filled with house canned pickles and veggies. Service is attentive and informative.

“Welcoming atmosphere, excellent service”

We dined at The Grocery on Sunday night. Erica was our server. The food was delicious, I especially liked the way the menu was organized so that it was easy to order the exact quantity of food to share. We had two bites, a table, and a side. Bites were oysters and gnocchi. Roasted sea bass was our table and we had a side of cauliflower casserole. Everything was exceptionally prepared and fresh. The space itself is lovely and the entire staff was welcoming. Our server, Erica, really made us feel that she was there for us rather than vice versa.

“Another Cannon Street gem.”

A great week in Charleston, capped off by a visit to The Grocery. We loved the setting...spacious, comfortable, really quite beautiful. We chose Tilefish, Scallops, and Steamed Clams. Everything was excellent, including the wine. The service was spot-on- staff there when we needed them, and invisible when we didn't. Don't miss the crispy Pimento Cheese and it's your loss if you don't try the Key lime Pie. Our only complaint: the serving sizes could have been more generous. Price was appropriate for the quality but a little steep for the quantity.
