Owner description: Experience the sounds that define Charleston's musical history...from gospel to Gershwin. Each weekly live concert features music of the Civil War; light classics of the venerable St. Cecelia Society; the music of George Gershwin, who wrote "Porgy & Bess" during a summer in Charleston; gospel spirituals sung by slaves as they passed through the port of Charleston; and "Amazing Grace", the words of which were inspired in the composer, John Newton, while he worshipped in our host venue, Circular Congregational Church. Frommers Travel Guide says, "the best night out in Charleston...a must see performance. Visit our website or call the box office for concert dates and ticket information.

The Master of Ceremonies made us all feel warmly welcomed and kept us informed about the special skills of the performers and the nature of their music. We particularly enjoyed the folk music and the Porgy and Bess solos by the supremely talented African American musicians; and we will never forget joining in singing "Amazing Grace."

The Sound of Charleston is a wonderful production showcasing Charleston's musical heritage. My tour group enjoyed the performers immensely! We also loved getting to visit the beautiful Circular Congregational Church. It was a highlight of our tour!

It is held at one of the churches in historic downtown. There is a paid parking lot right across the street.

The emcee is the director of music of the cathedral of St John. He was definitively enthusiatic and quite entertaining. The concert played different kind of music, including gospel music, show tunes from Porgy and Bass (the story of which is based in Charleston), civil war folk songs.

It was a enjoyable 90 min before my late dinner reservation.
