Owner description: Experience the sounds that define Charleston's musical history...from gospel to Gershwin. Each weekly live concert features music of the Civil War; light classics of the venerable St. Cecelia Society; the music of George Gershwin, who wrote "Porgy & Bess" during a summer in Charleston; gospel spirituals sung by slaves as they passed through the port of Charleston; and "Amazing Grace", the words of which were inspired in the composer, John Newton, while he worshipped in our host venue, Circular Congregational Church. Frommers Travel Guide says, "the best night out in Charleston...a must see performance. Visit our website or call the box office for concert dates and ticket information.

“Interesting but not outstanding”
Reviewed March 30, 2014

A musical melange of different styles of music with some history lessons thrown in as well. The performers are certainly very good and are willing to stay and chat after the performance. As a tourist experience it gets top marks. Serious music lovers going to enjoy a concert who have already got their history fix at other attractions would find it somewhat of a disappointment.

“Signature Charleston Experience -- Five Thumbs Up”
Reviewed March 30, 2014

From Seattle .. went to Charleston just to see someplace different .. GREAT history, architecture, food and people ... But the Sounds of Charleston 90 minute experience gives you a chance to sit and enjoy a small piece of the city's history and music. Hands down the best time we spent ....

“Entertaining historic combination of music and song”
Reviewed March 21, 2014

The production is very well put on. They walk through the different historically relevant time periods for Charleston and tie the music of the time to each. The place was packed on a Wednesday night, so I would suggest getting there a little early for a decent seat. Not all of the songs actually came from Charleston, but they were relevant to the time period that was described. Fun evening, and a different option of entertainment in this city filled with lots of history.

“Sensational performance!”
Reviewed March 21, 2014

This was a real highlight of our trip! The performers were world class!
The taste of history was a plus to tie the musical selections.
The old circular church had fabulous acoustics making each even better.
A special duo piano performance of Gershwin was so Very memorable.
We only wish the co-player were introduced.
I would plan a trip to Charleston just to see this wonderful performance!
Do check the web site for dates as they were incorrect in some tourist publications......don't mis this!
