We decided to book a weekend getaway in charleston. I had never been and my husband only to hit the bar scenes visit a friend in college. Chose this hotel based on Hilton points, location and reviews. Plus it of course has a great breakfast included in the morning. Check in was a breeze although unlike most front desk folks at hamptons the clerk was really not that informative or welcoming. We did smell a slight musty smell in the front desk area due to the historic building however the dining area just beyond, the halls and our room did not. Slight concern after reading other reviews but again it was just as you entered. Requested a fridge a few days ahead and got a room with full kitchenette and a view of the courtyard. Room 230. A bit small however again historic building and a king bed. Had a nice couch sitting area and desk. All we could ask for. Bathroom nice and normal size. Room was very clean and smelled fresh. Again due to historic building you can hear the water from toilets flushing or the occasional shower turn on but nothing that I haven't heard in modern hotels as well. I would not recommend first floor unless you are on the far side near the courtyard. You have to walk by numerous rooms on the 1st just to get to the elevators.
We walked Friday night next door to coast and had an excellent meal. Then walked to some local pubs from there and pedi cab home. Saturday we did walk all the way to the markets and king street. A bit hot but it is definitely doable from the hotel with comfy shoes and a bottle of water. It is 6+ block walk so those that can't handle it you may want to grab a cab or pedicab.
Sat at the pool a few hours, perfect size and the courtyard is gorgeous and very private from the streets. Only small item was the hotel ran out of bottled water on every floor, the tap just had a beachy taste. The front desk was kind enough to help my husband get some filtered from the breakfast area. Overall great stay, great location and great price. We would definitely stay here again!!!!

Room Tip: Above 1st floor, request a room with a fridge if needed bc not all the rooms have one and a view of...

This is my second review of this hotel, i have stayed at this hotel for the last 2 years as my daughter attends College of Charleston and is walking distance to the college and downtown. This hotel is very consistant, the staff are very helpfull from Curtis (Bellman) to the front desk (Casey) to the ladies working the Breakfast area, they always make you feel like family! The rooms are clean and bright, i strongly reccomend this hotel to anyone.

I can't really add a lot to the good reviews of others but I do agree: good location on the north rim of the Historic district across from the Visitor's center, free trolley stop, Historic houses, great restaurants. We walked to the Battery one afternoon and took a taxi back after drinks and dinner for about $10. A rickshaw is $6 per person + tip. Breakfast was quite adequate with make your own waffles as the highlight. Hot Beverages are available all day in the lobby and in your room. The staff had a very friendly, relaxed way and seemed to enjoy working there and to be on good terms with each other. Charleston is a pretty pricey place and the Hampton was a good value considering. The housekeeping service was excellent. The doorman friendly and efficient. The courtyard and pool became busy but was nicely kept up. The young woman who checked us in was very nice and explained everything like it was the first time instead of like the thousandth as it was. I loved the fresh duvets everyday. Nice touch.

Just returned from bringing a group to Charleston and staying at the Hampton Inn-
Historic District. The staff was amazing, true Southern charm. Penelope at the
front desk was so nice and accomodating. Everyone there made us feel so
welcomed and very helpful in whatever we needed. Breakfast had lots of options.
The beds were very nice and the rooms were quite large. Lots of places to eat
within a few blocks. I would definitely stay there again.

Right across the street from the Visitors Center and all the stops for the free trolley, this is in the perfect location. Plus the Charleston Museum and the Joseph Manigault House are less than a block away. Numerous restaurants, the Macaroon Boutique, Paolo's Gelato, and the Blue Bicycle Bookstore are on the same block. Our room on the 3rd floor overlooked the entrance to the parking garage, but it was quiet. The room was spacious, the staff were friendly.

We had a great stay but the fact that we asked for a cab to the airport and the door man called a "limo" that charged us double provided a sour moment in an otherwise nice trip. We asked the front desk for a cab. We confirmed for a cab. And in the rush to leave it didnt occur to us to ask the driver what he charged. The trip into town was $20. The trip out of town was $40. Travelers beware.

Melanie,

I read your review and I want to thank you for taking the time to do so. We really do appreciate your business and your nice comments about the hotel. I can't apologize enough for the discrepancy with the transportation going back to the airport. Please reach out to me at the hotel so I can discuss this with you. We strive to provide the best possible service and accomodations in Charleston and feel awful when we miss the mark.

My wife and I stayed for 3 nights in mid-April and were very satisfied. With prices for many of the boutique properties within the historic district exorbitant we found this a perfect compromise. It is located on the edge of the district directly across the street from the Visitor Center which is very convenient for tours or the free trolley. It is a reasonable walk to all parts of the district, about 15 minutes to the farthest side battery streets. On a few days after much walking we did need to take the trolley back. The trolley can get crowded and look for the designated stops. The hotel was clean and breakfast buffet was good. They charge $14 per day to park - but you won't need your car once there. We did drive to the plantation (25 minutes) and saved the $50 extra a bus tour would have cost. There are 4-5 excellent restaurants within 2 blocks of the hotel so we ate lunch in the district restaurants and late dinner back by the hotel. Rooms are relatively small for a chain hotel - our's with 2 queens was long and narrow - but fine given the time spent.

Room Tip: If you want the feeling of a larger room - consider the King Bed rooms rather than 2Qs.
