Kevin McQuade, world-class concierge, makes Charleston magic

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Apr 10, 2016via mobile
I travel extensively and globally for business as well as pleasure, and have stayed in five-star hotels with talented and knowledgeable concierge staff ... but I have never had the pleasure of having my visit enhanced by a concierge with such dedication to personalized, above-and-beyond service. Kevin McQuade spent 45 minutes with me on a trans-Atlantic 'diagnostic' call the week before our arrival, asking great questions about our interests and desires so he could offer a customized menu of special Charleston experiences. It was 100% magic from beginning to end, and Kevin was the magician behind the scenes: access to unique tour guides and out-of-the-way places to visit, impossible-to-get reservations at James-Beard-Awarded restaurants, even a lightweight portable photographer's stool to help the oldest member of the gang rest during long walking tours. The Courtyard Marriott is well-situated, with nice rooms and extremely friendly and professional staff throughout the hotel ... but it's Kevin and his passion for client service that makes this THE place for your base camp. He gives every single guest who sits across from his lobby desk this same level of care and personalized attention, so if you're headed to this lovely city and want to make the most of your visit, this is the place.

We had a short but very nice trip to Charleston and were very pleased with the Courtyard Charleston Historic District. Kevin, our concierge, was able to get us last minute reservations at Hall's Chophouse which even he didn't think was possible. The location was perfect - we walked everywhere - down to the market, to Rainbow Row, to King Street. The service in the hotel was very good. Thanks to Trip Advisor reviews, we knew about the parking fee which is the norm for downtown Charleston. We would definitely return to this Courtyard location and hope to to do soon.

Clean rooms. Accommodated for 3 people in the room with a cot. Pleasant staff. Provided a great buffet breakfast for the group in a conference room.

Easy walking distance to historic sites. No outside noise to bother your sleep.

We were in Charleston for a 3 night stay while running the Bridge Run and visiting family. I am a Charlestonian who moved away for work a few years ago. So, I know the area very well.
We decided to stay in this Marriott property as we usually stay with Marriott and also it was close to Bridge Run activities. This hotel has been around for a while and was renovated when Marriott took it over several years ago.
The location is good. There are better hotels with better locations down the street. But, you pay a much higher price for those. The good thing about his location is that it is a short walk to the Aquarium and Gailliard. It is also central to shops and restaurants that are north of Calhoun as well as south of Calhoun. It is less than a mile to the Market, about 1.7 miles to the Battery. So, enjoy a walk on a nice day and go these spots. One downside to the location is that it can be hard to get out of the parking lot. As far as parking, it is not the greatest. There is a small lower level parking lot and then another that is on an upper level. It was busy the days we were there so we had to park at the church across the street or at the building behind the hotel. I didn't mind parking in those areas but they charge $18/day for parking. I parked in an area that is not on their property. I know downtown hotels usually have this type of pay for parking, but... Come on. I just don't think pay to park in necessary at this hotel.
One of the important factors is that it is a safe area. You can walk the streets and not worry. We walked everywhere we went downtown.
Marriott did a nice job when they renovated the hotel. The building is nice, clean. The lobby is very nice with a good decor. There is a little bar/bistro. However, I'm not eating there with all the good restaurants down the street.
We were greeted warmly by the desk attendant. Check in was quick and the elevators were just around the corner. The rooms are a good size. The beds were comfortable and there were plenty of pillows. The TV was a bit small but I guess that is standard. The bathroom was fine, nothing special. The towels were good as well.
I almost downgraded my score because we did have one small issue. They did not clean our room the first day. I don't really care if they change the bed every day but I want clean towels. When we noticed they did not clean the room, we asked the desk to sent clean towels. They never came. We called the next morning. We waited and they never came. If they had responded to our request, I probably wouldn't have given it a second thought. So, I think they need some improvement in this area.
Even with this issue, I would still recommend staying here. They have a nice pool and fitness room. You will love the location and you will love downtown Charleston.

Room tip: Higher floor for a view of Marion Square

We really enjoyed our trip here. The room was spacious and lovely. (The shampoo bottles were small- but that is no big deal.) I only gave it a 4 because it is across the street from a gas station. Good location and very convenient but I think I would have like to stay in a quainter part of town. (But it very close to many attractions including the fort sumter ferry.) Also, make sure to get Kevin McQuade's map because it is ridiculous. My Charleston friend's loved it and are excited to use it in the future :)

This hotel is just a block and a half from King Street! All you have to do is make a left and take it all in. Amazingly close to all things College of Charleston. Once you get to Market Street make a left and the shopping is just another few blocks. Rainbow Row isn't too far from there either.

The staff is sweet too. I've been here 3 times for work and every time I know I'm coming here I get excited. I do not have a choice of hotels when I'm on the road but I am always very happy with my stays here. Checking in is a super smooth process and the rooms are always clean. They have a concierge team available! They also have everything you can need in the hotel lobby (food, drink and snacks).

Can't wait to stay here again!
