“Great service and location”

What a gem in the heart of Charleston. Every employee very helpful. Walking distance to shopping, dining and everything else. Pass on the valet service ($24/day) because you won't need it. Ask for a cityview room on the 7th floor or higher for nice views.

I stayed at the Mills House over the Presidents Day Weekend in Feb 2011. I have stayed there before and still like it. The room was somewhat small, but clean and comfortable. The staff was very nice. Location, as always, was great to use as a base for wandering around Charleston and exploring the surrounding area. Some small complaints:
1. As others have noted, Queen St can be noisy. We were awakened at about 6 am by trash being collected.
2. The hotel charges 75 cents for local calls. I understand that a number of hotels do this, but some do not, and I always thought that when they are charging you $200 or so dollars a night it's chintzy and cheap to charge for local calls.
3. The hotel tells you they charge $22/night for parking, which, for a spot in town with valet parking, is normal. What they don't tell you is that there is a tax on top of that, bringing it up to $23.65/night. Not the end of the world, and I guess we should assume these days that EVERTYTHING is has taxes and fees and surcharges added, but I think they should have told us up front that it would be $22+.

This hotel is very close to the shopping and restaurants and has a nice feel to it. However my room was small and I could hear the person in the next room snoring, the walls were so thin. Also, their free wi-fi just did not work no matter what I did, though they did have a business centre where you could get free internet access, however it only had two PCs in it and only one seemed to work. When I called someone to come and fix the second one, I waited for about 20 minutes and gave up when nobody showed up.

Would stay here again if couldn't afford something with larger and nicer rooms/bathrooms. Walls are thin but that is the case in most hotels. Still, for the price, I thought the hotel was a good choice in a great location. They have good food.

We got this hotel through hot-wire for a mid week stay. We booked two rooms. Upon arrival at 12 noon we were checked in right away and the woman on the front desk gave us two king rooms and they also opened up the middle room as a living room for us at no charge. The hotel was beautiful and still historic. You would never know it was a holiday inn. We used valet parking for the convenience and it was $22. We would stay here again even at rack rate.

Stayed two nights at the Mills House for the Southeast Wildlife Expo this past weekend. The hotel's location was ideal for this event or for staying in the heart of the Charleston historic district. Nicely renovated "historic" hotel (after all Robert E. Lee did stay here in the mid-1800's). Our room was fine, nothing amazing, just a decent two bed hotel room. Nothing remarkable about the room itself.

My complaint is that the hotel staff were rather disinterested in our stay at the hotel. Upon arrival, the desk clerk was efficient at checking us in but was obviously having a grumpy day. No pleasantries or southern hospitality shown at all. About 15 min after check in, I returned to the valet car drop in front of the hotel to find that my new vehicle had been left unlocked by the valet and unattended. I retrieved my forgotten belongings and registered my complaint with the front desk. The clerk was not the least bit concerned by this fact and attempted to refer me back to the valet to complain rather than handling the complaint appropriately. Through out our stay the desk clerks seemed generally put out at any request or question posed to them. The only amount of hospitality shown to us by hotel staff was by one of the valet/bellmen upon our departure. He was the single example of southern hospitality we experienced during our stay.

Our stay had potential but just really fell short with the lack of customer service. Still a nice hotel, but next time I will most likely find some where else to stay.

Made reservations online without too many problems (see black out date remark below), While reserving the room we requested a king bed (due to comfort, we arent as skinny as we used to be). Checked in on Fri 2/11 without a problem, was given two drink vouchers for the bar, which was nice.
Room 419 however was terrible. Two small beds, broken toilet lid, which is an accident waiting to happen..., a water damaged bathroom door. Went immediately downstairs to the front desk and asked if another room was available. Was told "No" (and we have Ambassador Status that we pay extra $$$ for that is "supposed" to entitle you to an upgraded room. hahaha... the joke was on us). Was told by desk clerk that rewards nights are "Run of the Mill Rooms".... Not quite sure what that means but it didn't make us feel all warm and cozy. This particular room was definitely NOT a "FREE" room since we had to buy extra points in order to stay there due to them requiring two nights in order to redeem the points. AND We have been regular guests of the Mills House for over 5 years. Was told to check back the next day for another room, since they were fully booked. Fully booked, meaning 3 weddings booked and occupying ALL of the hotel, which meant bar, restaurant, and outside garden areas were closed to regular paying and "run of the mill" guests like us. Checked back with desk on Saturday, and was told there wasn't availability until the next afternoon (Sunday). We were scheduled to check out Sunday morning.
Priority Club Members... The old" No "black out" dates" line is a fib too! .... When we booked the room online, Mills House required 2 nights. Site kept saying there wasn't availability for just one night. Thus, had to spend money on extra points to be "a run of the mill" guest. Love how the room key holder shouts... NO BLACK OUT DATES!!!
When checking out they didn't even ask how our stay was. I definitely don't recommend being a "run of the mill" guest.

Thank you for your comments. We apologize for the problems experienced during your stay. Our goal is to host every guest in a clean and comfortable environment and to greet them with a friendly welcome. We fell well short of our goals during your stay.

In reference to your guest room request, while I was not there to hear the response from our front desk team member, I believe the phrase they may have used is “run of house” rather than “run of the mill.” While we always discourage our team’s use of industry specific terms, “run of house” refers to reservations booked without guaranteeing a specific room type. Reservations made under this room category are guaranteed a room, but not a bedding type. While we always try to honor requests for bedding type on all reservations, all of our rooms with a king bed had already been reserved over the Valentines Day weekend when your reservation was confirmed on February 8th. Since the hotel was fully committed during your stay, we were not able to offer complimentary upgrades, as those upgraded rooms had been sold.

Again please accept our apologies for a stay well short of your expectations. It is our hope that all our guests depart the Mills House with a feeling of genuine hospitality, rather than disappointed with their hotel choice.
