We stayed at the Holiday Inn Charleston - Mill House when we did a road trip a few years ago. The room was a little small but other than that we loved this hotel. It was beautiful, clean and service was great! Since it was 90+ degrees when we visited, we loved the pool and deck area. The hotel was very pretty and elegant inside and the concierge was helpful. Would stay here again! Also LOVED LOVED LOVED Charleston by the way!

Whatever you do, don't stay in this hotel! Especially if you book through a travel site like Orbitz or Expedia. They treat those customers completely differently (read: like trash) than customers booking through their own site. They won't return phone calls or emails, so you're totally on your own if you have a problem. Meanwhile, they're happy to charge ridiculous high rates and then sit on your money like the greedy jerks they are. There are tons of nice hotels in Charleston - this is not one of them!!!

Charleston, SC is a prime destination site for weddings. I grew up in Charleston, SC as a child and have returned there many times to visit over the years. We attended a wedding reception at the Mills House several years ago and were so impressed that our daughter also chose the same venue for her reception as well as accommodations for her guests.

Not only is the hotel beautiful and in a prime location, but the Barbadoes Room is just fantastic to use with the adjacent courtyard and fountain. A perfectly elegant night with an outstanding variety of choices of food to offer our guests (true Southern cuisine). My husband personally thanked every staff member at the reception for their dedication and hard work for 300 guests for five hours.

The experienced staff in the event planning/reservation was our true wedding planner. Every detail was attended too prior to our arrival in Charleston and throughout the entire reception.

From check-in to check-out four days later, we were greeted with the best "southern hospitality" that Charleston has to offer.

Thank you, staff of Mills House, for a beautiful and memorable week-end!

Chris Sanders

The Mills House pre-dates the Civil War and is shown in a lot of the historic photos of the city. In fact when it was built in the mid-19th century it was one of the leading hotels in the South. It is truly an historic gem which has been beautifully preserved. While it is an old building the hotel does have modern amenities and certainly feels modern. Just modern with character.

It has been run by different chains through the decades (Hyatt once, many others as well, now Holiday Inn), but she has always maintained her charm and beauty. As a Holiday Inn, it must be one of the top properties for the chain.

The location is ideal in that it is downtown in the historic area about a block from "the 4 Corners of Law" which kind of mark the traditional center of town. Sure it is a walk to get to the Market or Battery, but that should not be a major problem. I have stayed solo for business and for fun with the family and never had a bad experience. On the plus side is the value of the hotel. Being a Holiday Inn, it is one of the more reasonably priced hotels in the area. Of course price always is a function of when you decide to go to Charleston, so I guess that can be relative.

On the candid side, I think the rooms are small, but well appointed. I found service somewhat lacking and checking in if you have a car can be an ordeal. But then again you are not paying for a 5 Star resort but a Holiday Inn. The Bar and restaurant is a bit overpriced, but that is true with a lot of places. If you want to stay in an historic old hotel with modern amenities in a good location at a reasonable price, then the Mills House is a good option.

The hotel was very nice except for one BIG problem. When we were in our bathroom, which was rather small, we could hear every single word and sound from the people in the room next to us through the vent. It was as if we were in the very same room with them. To me, this was a big invasion of privacy, especially if you were not aware of it and your conversation was being overheard by the people next door. I called the management after arriving home and was told that they were aware of it, that it was only in certain rooms and there was nothing that could be done. I suggested that they needed to at least let their guests that stay in those rooms know about this problem. Again, they seemed not to care about this problem.

Don't let the Holiday Inn name dissuade you. This is a charming hotel in the heart of downtown Charleston. We live in nearby Beaufort and this is always are hotel of choice when we come to visit for the weekend or overnight. The accomodations are excellent with spacious, well-appointed rooms. Take time to enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the courtyard around the fountain! We've got walk-in rates around $100/hight many times.
