“Excellent location, very small accommodations”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2013

If you are wanting a clean room at a reasonable price with proximity to great restaurants, the historic sites, and the waterfront at a reasonable price -- you won't go wrong with this property. We appreciated that we were within walking distance from all the places we wanted to go and things we wanted to see. The room and bathroom were VERY tiny. The layout of the sleeping/sitting area -- couldn't even walk between the end of the bed and the desk -- NO exaggeration. We had to move the desk chair and desk over to be able to walk in the space at the end of the bed to the window (oh -- speaking of the window -- on the 8th floor you get a great view of the town and water). I recommend desk chairs that actually fit UNDER the desk to allow for walking space -- not sure how else to make the room not so crowded with furniture. Same with the bathroom - you have to walk in and between the toilet and the wall to even close the door. TINY!

But all that said -- clean room, good location.

Location and ambiance make this hotel an excellent choice. We were able to come and go from the hotel lobby by walking to restaurants, shopping, bakeries, ice cream stores, fudge and candy stores within 5 min. walking distance. There are many historic sites to tour, restored antebellum homes, and beautiful waterfront parks close enough to walk to and easily return to hotel for refreshment or to drop off purchases and go right back out to your day's activities. The concierge on weekdays and weekend days was very helpful and easy to talk to. The front two parlors are on opposite sides of a beautiful entrance way with double staircases to second floor. Robert E. Lee stayed in this hotel on the eve of a fire that swept through the city and there are several interesting stories about his stay and the survival of the hotel. The rooms are not extra large, but are the same size as most luxury hotels that are not suites. We had 4 people in our room and there was plenty of room with a desk and a table with two side chairs in front of the window. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the room. The patio beside the indoor restaurant is delightful with a lovely water fountain in the center. It opens out to the street, and is easily accessible during the day to come back by for coffee or a cold drink. The food and service here is excellent. I highly recommend this hotel for your stay in Charleston.

Charming Charleston Hotel in a great location. Close to historic downtown and plenty of great restaurants. Nice pool area - which is hard to find downtown. Staff was very nice and helpful. Only complaint is that beds are a bit soft for my taste. All in great place with excellent amenities.
