“Nice location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2012

The hotel is in a great location very close walk to everything like City Market, Battery Park, shopping on Market Street, etc. The hotel was nice, bellhops helpful. We took our 4 yr old and 1.5 yrs old and even though there is a parking garage next door, we found it easier to have the help in having our car brought to us. Room was nice but the bathrooms were small for us with young ones, everything seemed to stay wet in there. The Gibbs Art Museum is just about next door, so I went in there during a nap time. Be sure to use the free trolleys in the city, nicely air conditioned. We ate at the hotel several times, kids eat free with adult. The food was ok, it was more convenient than anything. It was nice, not sure if I would stay again with little ones, but it was in a great location with a beautiful room, so it made up for that.

I spent a week in Charleston recently while visiting my husband who was in training at FLETC. I wanted to spend some time downtown but didn't want to stay at a downtown hotel for the whole week due to cost and to the difficult parking downtown. The other hotel I stayed at while in Charleston was the Crowne Plaza (another review).

The hotel is in a great location: close to the Dock theater, along the museum mile, 3-4 blocks from the harbor, and 1 block from King Street. Self parking is in a garage adjacent to the hotel run by the city. It's on the expensive end: $20/day with no in/out privileges. The hotel lobby and courtyard are beautiful, and it was nice that they had a concierge to help you with sightseeing.

The room is on the small side compared to the hotels we've stayed in Las Vegas/Scottsdale but is about the size of rooms in San Francisco. It's a historical hotel, so the rooms and decor is more traditional vs. modern. We requested a king room but they only had doubles when we checked in so they gave us a room on the 6th floor which was nice. The front desk was very accommodating and found us a king room the next day. There's a great French cafe around the corner, Gaulert & Maliclet, where you can get a wonderful chocolate croissant and french press coffee for less than $5. We had a good experience at this hotel and would recommend it overall.

Room Tip: 2nd floor rooms have a balcony facing the pool, but you won't have any privacy because everyone...

The Mills House has it all....great location, lovely rooms, a beautiful pool and a fine restaurant. The only thing better than the physical property is its staff. They are super. Rob Weil really gets the whole customer service thing. My husband and I were at the Mills House due to an illness in our family. Rob, Erica Stajcer, new member of the team, Denise, and Zach (sorry, I do not know his last name) were super. They understood our problems and provided a solution to all our queries. Andra the concierge was helpful; Brett who is on staff in the Barbadoes Room was accommodating and knowledgeable. Thank you Rob, Erica, Denise, Zach(always helpful and smiling). I must not forget Mike of the Bell Staff. Thanks for making our stay pleasant. You are all appreciated. The rooms are clean and pretty.

We are spending our vacation in Hilton Head and decided to go up to Charleston for the day and spend the night. I decided to do Priceline because other than the area we wanted to stay in, the hotel did not matter. I Put in $75 and we go the Mill House Hotel. Got decent reviews on Trip Advisor so we were fine with it. As it turns out we were more than fine. It is a beautiful hotel with lots of antiques in the lobby. The pool area was nice and had tables with umbrellas. There was a small fitness room that we used and the equipment was in great shape. That evening we sat outside by the restaurant. We didn't plan on having dinner but got a bottle of wine and some soup. We spent at least 2 hours out there and never felt like they wanted us to leave. I read the reviews that said the rooms were small. I disagree with that. I would say the rooms were average size. The bed was great; I didn't wake up with a back ache like the condo we are staying at on Hilton Head. The room was very clean and the soap and shampoo, etc that they give smelled like heaven. We would pay thier full price and stay there again when we come back. The only complaint was when we went to bed, there was a sound like a machine running constantly. I told myself it is like white noise and I slept fine. In the morning when we left, I heard the sound in the hall and I think it was the ice machine that I heard during the night. We were two rooms away from it but it was quite loud.

Room Tip: Stay far away from the ice machines.

We had the pleasure of staying at the Mills House on Labor Day weekend to attend a wedding. I actually booked two rooms, one last minute. The first room was in the wedding block -- a standard king room; the second room was a last minute addition and there were no more wedding block rooms available -- so I had to go for the king room view, one of the only ones available. The first room was on the 4th floor and was very nice -- no view of the water but still had a nice sight of the city. It was comfortable and well laid out. The king view room was very nice and on the 7th floor (highest available) with a view of the water. Awesome. However, this room had a MUCH smaller bathroom than the standard room on the 4th floor.

The wedding reception was held in the ballroom and was done very, very well. The servers were excellent and the food was tasty. The concierge was extremely helpful for our big group (127 wedding guests stayed the weekend for this destination wedding). The location was super -- you can walk to great restaurants, interesting shops and great nightlife spots.

If I had a complaint, it seemed as if the valet was not prepared for the full house and was extremely slow. With just a few spaces out front to park for valet, it became a mess quickly. But a little patience and some smiles and all worked out. All in all, a very successful weekend stay.

Room Tip: View rooms have teeny tiny bathrooms

The best thing about the Mills House Hotel is the location. You are in the heart of all the hot spots in downtown Charleston - Market Street, Meeting, Bay Street, King Street. We parked (be advised parking is $20 a day, but it is difficult to find a hotel in downtown that doesn't charge for parking) and walked to dinner and the fountain and kept finding great spots to pop into. You can pay for valet parking at $26 a day and if you park in the deck behind the hotel there is a walkway that leads to the hotel which was worth the $20. The rooms are smaller than standard hotels, but for a night or two it works. Mattress was good, pillows could have used some help.
It is a pretty hotel with high ceilings and lots of space with comfortable chairs and a nice bar area. If you go in warmer weather, bring your swimsuit. The pool deck is huge. They have complimentary pool towels, which is always appreciated. Below the pool deck is another deck with nice lounge chairs and four top tables. Great for an after dinner spot. I would suggest BYOB as the bar can get expensive and we saw a lot of people with coolers. A great way to spend an afternoon for sure.
There is no free breakfast which you can find in many hotels in downtown Charleston and always helps with the food budget. With priority points we had a higher floor with a view which was nice but you aren't in Charleston to stare out the window. I would stay there again, especially if the rates were competitive.
I must give a shout out to the staff, they were always smiling and saying hello and one staff member helped us find a vending machine when we got home late but needed a bite. He also gave us a pizza take out menu which was great.

Room Tip: There are a few rooms on the second floor, which is the pool area floor that have small outside area...

Stayed 2 days during the last week in July 2012. Great nice old hotel. Had no problems. Everyone was very nice. Only thing I didn't like was the $20.00 a day parking fee. Other than that, nice location within walking distance of most everything. Used priority points and got a free upgrade to room with a view.

Room Tip: Poolside view is probably the best.
