This may be a hidden gem in Charleston. The hotel and antiques in it's public areas are worth staying at this hotel for. Beautiful restaurant and courtyard area. Would always be my first choice for this city.

Thank you for your comments. Originally opened in 1853, our lobbies boast museum quality antiques, including three pieces that are circa 1790 and a beautiful 19 foot long breakfront with china, both circa 1850. The current collection of antiques and artwork were assembled by legendary collector Anthony Hale, who was also responsible for the restoration of the Kennedy White House. The collection allows us to be included on Charleston’s Museum Mile and we are the host hotel for the spring Charleston Art and Antiques Forum. The Mills House was also a big hit on the Historic Charleston Foundation’s 2011 Tour of Homes and Gardens.

Our fountain courtyard was designed by renowned landscape architect Loutrell Briggs, who is credited with defining the “Charleston Garden.” The fountain is circa 1845. While in the courtyard, locate the brass sign for the Barbadoes Dining Room. This sign dates to 1860 and is part of the collection Mr. Hale assembled. The historic spelling of Barbadoes is the spelling we use for the name of our dining room.

We look forward to your return visit to the Mills House in the near future.

We held a wedding reception and nothing could have been better. The food was great, the staff was exceptional, the accommodations were wonderful and special thanks to Jayne Long for being there the whole time and making sure everything was perfect.

Location - perfect & this is so important when staying in a city like Charleston. Near historical centre, waterfront, shopping, restaurants & everything you could want.
Architecture & ambiance - wonderful, this beautiful old building has been impeccably maintained exteriorally & in the public areas. Gives a grand, opulent feel.
Staff - are very helpful indeed & a big asset to the hotel. Big grateful mention to Rob Weil, Front Office supervisor. I had daily medication which needs mixing with boiling water. He immediately arranged for a kettle to be placed in the room for me for the duration of the stay. Doesn't sound like much but I really appreciated this. A charming & courteous young man. We were offered a later check out onthe last day, much appreciated.
Outdoor areas - the courtyard is beautiful to sit and have a drink & the pool area & terraces are a great facility in a city which was having a heatwave when we were there. Once criticism - there is a notice which says *Pool for the use of hotel guests only & this is inforced*. It is not. We were fine, we always got loungers but there was blatent use of the facility from people not staying at the hotel, especially at weekends. I was saddened to see guests from the hotel come out to the pool only to find there was no room for them, so had to return indoors. The hotel needs to deal with this, there are a variety of means which could be used with minimal cost to them.
Rooms - ours on the top floor was a good size for a city hotel & included a small seating area. We had nice views of the city. The rooms need attention. There should be an in-room safe & fridge for a 4 star hotel of this quality. The shower in the bathroom is antiquated & should be upgraded. Towels are poor quality. Only a little money would need to be spent to bring the rooms up to standard.
We enjoyed our stay there & will return next year. I know that in Charleston the Mills house is probably the best there at that level. The Holiday Inn Group should invest a little money upgrading the rooms.

Thank you for your comments and feedback.

The Historic Mills House Hotel is located in the very heart of the Historic District. We are but a short stroll to the historical attractions, fine dining and boutique shopping that have combined to place Charleston as the #2 U.S. Destination as voted by readers of both Conde’ Nast Traveller and Travel+Leisure magazines for 2011! The City Market is only two blocks north of the hotel; close enough for easy access, but enough distance so the nightlife is not right outside your bedroom window. We are the closest full service hotel to the South of Broad residential area, the country’s largest collection of 18th and 19th century homes and churches. The hotel is one block from the King Street shopping district and from the French Quarter Art District, so park your car, Charleston is best discovered on foot.

The Mills House originally opened in 1853 and has hosted guests to include Confederate Generals PGT Beauregard and Robert E. Lee, as well as President Theodore Roosevelt. At the time it opened in 1853, The Mills house was considered the finest hotel south of New York and was the first public building in Charleston to have running water and steam heat on a large scale. The public areas are furnished in 18th and 19th century antiques and art work, while guest rooms are furnished in period reproductions, enhanced by a demi-canopy bed.

It sounds as if you may have reserved one of our Corner Rooms on the 7th Floor. These rooms face Charleston Harbor and have four windows, all with water views. While these rooms are somewhat more expensive than our standard rooms, they are among the favorites for repeat guests. There are only 5 of these room types in the hotel, so book these early.

Our 2nd floor pool deck is really a hidden asset for the hotel. We are one of only a few Historic District hotels with a pool and it is beautiful. Thank you for your feedback on the non-hotel guests using the pool. We will increase the patrolling of that area by our security team to insure amble room for hotel guests.

While the facilities at the Mills House are wonderful, the team who work with us are really what makes the hotel special. We encourage our team to find ways to exceed expectations at every opportunity. It is our belief that having a great room is important, it is the service that our guests remember and Rob certainly reflects the Mills House philosophy.

Thank you again for your feedback. It is through constructive criticism that we are able to improve the guest experience. We look forward to your next visit.

We spent two nights at the Mills House and had a wonderful time. The decor is beautiful and has the feel of "old Charleston". The hotel is in a great downtown location within easy walking distance of everything you want to see. We were there for Carolina Day and had a great time. Great employees made the visit a great one.

Thank you for your comments. Originally opened in 1853 and located in the very heart of the Historic District, the Mills House Hotel uniquely combines the charm and beauty of 19th century Charleston with contemporary luxury to provide the quintessential Charleston experience.

What a great time to be in Charleston. Carolina Day celebrates one of the earliest major victories over the British of our young republic in the Revolutionary War. This battle provides the imagery of the palmetto tree and gorget (google it) that are on our State flag (for those who believe it is a crescent moon, no argument from this writer).. Charleston has a rich revolutionary history, to include Fort Moultrie, the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon. The Signers Ballrooms at the Mills House are named in honor of Charleston’s four signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Our team is our most important asset and we appreciate your recognition of what really makes for a great hotel. We hope to see you soon on your next trip to Charleston.

To be fair, this is a nice hotel - 4 stars. But they have adopted a growing policy among many hotels - a 72 hour cancellation policy. Cancel less than 3 days before your stay and you pay anyway. The only way to beat this is to make no reservations at any hotel that has such a policy.

Thank you for your comments and for booking with The Mills House Hotel in Historic Charleston. The standard hotel cancellation policy is 48 hours before 6pm on the day of arrival. However, on occasion our cancellation deadline is extended for city wide events and some holiday weekends. Examples of these would be Cooper River Bridge Run or Fourth of July Weekend. This allows guests, who are on a waiting list for reservations, an opportunity to make their travel plans when cancellations arise. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and will continue to work on improving communication of special event policies.

This hotel is very nice...from outside. Our room was at 7 th floor and the noise from air conditioning installed on the roof was just horrible. Impossible to sleep. The view from our room was on the public parking...nevertheless the staff was very helpful but a little sleepy

This was our fourth visit to Charleston and our fourth stay at the Mills House. We love this historic hotel and the location. This was the first time we used the pool since the temperature was 100+ degrees. The pool was very well maintained and relaxing. We are looking forward to our next stay at the Mills House.
