“Beautiful hotel”
Reviewed January 6, 2011

I stayed here with my fiance just a few days ago. This is really a beautiful hotel. Charleston Place is in the best location possible. Our room was beautiful and spacious and decorated beautifully. We had a king bed & small balcony that had a perfect view. It was so fun to watch the snow from our balcony on 12/26! The bathroom was elegant with double sinks and a spacious shower/bath combination. This hotel has 24 hour maid service so each time we left our room the maid would come in. Each night our bed would be turned down with a Charleston Wafer or chocolates with the lights dimmed. My fiance got a massage at the spa and thought it was wonderful. We had great drinks at the Thoroughbred Club and also enjoyed drinks at Charleston Grill where they had a live band playing. The concierge was so helpful and gave us some great restaurant & tour recommendations. If we ever go back to Charleston, this will be the place we stay!

I am blown away by the treatment i received at this hotel. A long story, but in short (and i have never written a bad review on a hotel before), the bellman at 1am literally went out of his way to make sure i could not easily get a taxi even to the point of sending one away telling him he was not needed anymore. I finally got my own two hours later at 3am.

The hotel did nothing except to say how hard it is to get cabs in Charleston.

For a hotel masquerading as first class i have never felt so poorly treated.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience. As I do with every guest review, I reviewed this specific issue with our staff. While you weren't a guest of our hotel, our bellman was more than happy to assist in finding you transportation back to your accommodations, including several taxis that were parked near the hotel. Unfortunately, we have no control over Yellow Cabs late-night service in the downtown area, which I understand was your preferred taxi service. Thanks again for sharing your comments.

The lobby of the hotel was really nice (as are most hotels) but the rooms really needed a good cleaning and some updating. I realize that they are going for the historical look but they still need to make the rooms comfortable. The bathrooms needed a REALLY GOOD cleaning. The tiles in the shower were very dirty. Also, the TV was very old. I know that you don't go to Charleston to watch TV but at 11pm I like to watch TV before falling asleep and a tube TV just doesn't cut it. Some of the furniture was damaged and when the furnace kicked on it was very, very loud. It was an OK hotel - just not worth $265 a night.

I'd like to thank you for sharing feedback on your recent stay at Charleston Place. While I don't enjoy reading about any negative issues our guests experience, it is valuable information that allows us to continually improve the hotel and the services we provide.

I'm very sorry about the housekeeping issues you encountered during your visit. I intend to review this issue with our Director of Housekeeping. We strive for excellence in our housekeeping efforts and are typically very thorough, but in this case obviously fell short.

I also appreciate your comments about the decor and furnishings in our rooms. We are always working to keep our rooms updated with modern amenities while maintaining the historic decor and charm that our guests enjoy.

We went to Charleston on a "foodie" visit which included a stay in the Charleston Place. It's location in the center of Charleston could not be better. We arrived and found the service to be impeccable, the room very nice, and apart from a child bouncing a ball upstairs above our room - a perfect stay. The event with the child was handled very quickly and nicely by the hotel staff and they stopped by to ensure it was okay in our room after having handled it.

The food at the Charleston Grill was exceptional and at the Palmetto Court for our breakfasts, similarly. Only drawback was an expensive breakfast bill, but not uncommon for nice hotels.

Reception, bellmen, parking attendants, and maid service was all excellent. The concierge found us discounted golf, recommended fine restaurants, and overall were very helpful - use them.

This hotel is elegant, stylish, and warm. Superbly decorated rooms. Lobby and amenities are gorgeous. Location can't be beat. Service was excellent with Robert at the front desk a standout. Restaurants and bar are pricey but food was great. It will be the only place we will stay when in charming Charleston.

Stayed here with my wife to get all of our Christmas shopping done in Charleston. We are both familiar with Charleston but had never stayed at this property. The room rate of $165 was fair compared to other rates we have seen in the past. The hotel runs between King and Meeting Streets and is technically adjacent to the Market. Location is superb. When we arrived the bellmen on call were great. Check in was simple and everyone was enthusiastic and helpful. The lobby was decorated for Christmas and it was beautiful. The concierge was very helpful in making dinner reservations for us....there are too many great restaurants in Chrleston to list!!

The hotel itself is very clean and upscale. The stores inside the hotel are very nice and semed to be bustling everytime we walked by. We stayed on the third floor in a King room. OK...here is where my review gets awkward...I did not like the room..but my wife loved it. Our room had a large armoir which served as a closet and a TV holder. this piece of furniture made the room look VERY outdated. My wife thought that the armoir was in good taste since Charleston is old and Southern. I personally feel like a hotel of this calibur should have some sort of flat screen HD TV. I will concede on this issue. There are 2 other issues with the room that we agreed on. #1 Temperature control. Our room thermostat looked like it belonged in a 1970's motel. It was difficult to see the temperature and it never seemed like the temperature was where it needed to be. We both agreed that this was a problem but we did not complain about it because the outside temperature was UNSEASONABLY cold and dry. We figured that their AC/Heat system is more geared towards drying out the air due to the humidity in Charleston. for this reason we rated the sleep quality and room quality lower than average. #2...the shower. Oh man...come on!! the shower was absolutely pathetic. Again...the shower head looked like it was out of a 1970's motel. Very bad!! My wife has ultra thick hair and the shower could barely penetrate her hair. Not a good shower!! and there are absolutely no excuses for this place not to have a better shower!!!

Last but not least...there is no WIFI in your room. You can log in with a cable and it is free.

Overall this hotel is great but it could be a lot better with a good shower. Really this is the only major complaint we have. We have to give the hotel a pass on the room temperature and thermostat simply because the weather was so unusually cold.

There are too many good places to stay in Charleston...next time we will probably try another hotel unless we can score a fabulous deal.

Wanted a special place for our 30th anniversary. Upon arrival our room was upgraded to a suite, had a cake and bottle of champagne waiting for us. The hotel location is perfect for shopping and walking to city attractions. Ample staff to meet all your needs.
The hotel met all our expectations and then some.
