“It's All About the Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

One of the reasons I like the Marriott brand is the consistency. The rooms are always clean, beds comfortable, staff friendly but not intrusive. The Renaissance Charleston is an older hotel but well-kept. My friend had a military discount (which is not good on Fri/Sat nites) and $137 is a bargain for this area. That same hotel can run $400+ for the same room. Proximity to King St. is nice, but if money is not an issue, I'd stay at the Vendue Inn on the other end (by the water) of the historic district. The elevator is fast (only 5 floors), lobby nice, plus to have a bar on site. We didn't have a car here but the valet parking was over $20. Only other negative is that there is no sink outside of the bathroom. Staff is well-trained and questions were answered promptly. The lady at the concierge was more than willing to make dinner reservations and assist with tours.

I had a great stay for business while in Charleston. My room was comfortable and the doorman and front desk associate was amazing. They were upbeat, friendly and went out of their way to help me feel comfortable. The gym is nicely equipped and the pool is private. Stay on the 3rd floor where the amenities are at, with easy access.

Room Tip: Rooms are small and the views aren't that great, tops of buildings, but overall a nice stay for...

We're Marriott fans, so we decided to stay here for our recent trip. Perfectly located in the middle of everything, but on a side street so you don't feel like you're in the thick of things! Arrived, polite and helpful valets, with bellhops who took all our stuffs up to room for us, even offering to get us ice for the room! Desk staff very courteous and helpful-I loved that they greeted us each time, wishing us well as we left and commenting when we returned, too. The lobby bar was nice--woulda been lovely with a fire going. Breakfast in restaurant was fine--par for the course. A bit expensive if you have to pay for it. Room was always cleaned promptly in the mornings, all amenities were pleasing. Only negative I have is that the hallways are kept COLD.

I usually stay at the Francis Marion hotel in Charleston but could not get a room there on a recent trip. Booked a night at the Renaissance even though it was way more expensive than I wanted to pay but since most other hotels were booked thought I would go ahead and splurge. I was disappointed. To start we pulled up to check in after a five hour drive only to have to manhandle our own four suitcases out of the car while three male hotel staff members watched without lifting a finger. ( we were two women and our two daughters). We walked in to the lobby to check in only to discover that our reservations had been messed up. Had specified two double beds in the room and my room only had one bed. The young woman at the desk did adjust my room rate which made me feel a little better and gave us all breakfast vouchers which we appreciated. That was until I walked into the room! It was "tired" looking, very small, and with a bed that looked to barely be a "full" sized bed. I don't think I have ever seen such a small bed in a hotel room! Everything was just mediocre and certainly not what I expected for the price!! Our breakfast was quite good the next morning and the waiter delightful. The staff at the front desk were courteous and helpful. And good news! When we went to load our car after checking out a member of the hotel staff helped put all the suitcases in the car!
