Owner description: Middleton Place is an 18th century rice plantation and National Historic Landmark comprising 65 acres of America's oldest landscaped Gardens, the Middleton Place House Museum and the Plantation Stableyards. The Gardens reflect the elegant symmetry of 17th century European design. Sculpted terraces, parterres, and reflection pools inhabited by swans are highlights of their intricate design. Rare camellias bloom in the winter, while vibrant azaleas blanket the hillside above the Mill Pond in the spring.

“Impressive experience.”

We were impressed by the restored home and gardens of this plantation. We bought the heritage passport which included two plantations, art museums and historical homes in the area at the Visitors Center on Meeting Street. Each passport was under $55 each for my friend and I. these were the thrust of our learning about Charleston so I didn't think it was expensive, but it was very educational and left us with a sense of appreciation for the culture of Charleston at that time. Thanks for the education. Don't try to do this in much under 3 hours.

“Wonderful Sprawling Plantation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2013

We spent the day here with our friends, just taking pictures, enjoying lunch and horseback riding. Beautiful gardens with all sorts of little alcoves throughout. The house tour was very informative. I would suggest eating at the restaurant there as they had great local fare at reasonable prices. If looking for equestrian activities they have something for everyone. They do carriage tours there at the plantation or just before getting to the main plantation entrance they have stables which offer trail rides along the back side of the property. Overall a wonderful place to spend the majority of a day.

“America's Oldest Landscaped Gardens”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2013

Situated on the Ashley River, the gardens of Middleton Place were laid out in 1741 and expanded during the subsequent centuries. The centerpiece of the plantation, the house museum, is what remains of three buildings that stood before the Civil War. Acre upon acre of developed gardens surround the house and out buildings. A good accompaniment to a visit here is a stop at the plantation's restaurant for lunch or dinner. A variety of low country specialties will tempt your appetite.

“Great Historic/Scenic Site!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2013

Although the "best time" is when the azaleas are in bloom (Feb/March) this is a terrific place to visit. Not just for people who appreciate incredible landscape architecture....the grounds and home are of historic significance and the vistas incredible. I first came over 15 years ago when I was new to South Carolina, and have been several times since as a resident of Charleston. Really a "must-see" for anyone in or visiting the Charleston area~
