Cemetery that dates back to the 1700's, extremely interesting gravestones and is situated on a lake that has alligators! If you are interested in Civil War history, the crews of the submarine, H.L. Hunley are interred there to include the inventor and builder of the first submarine, Horace L. Hunley.

Amazing. Quiet, shrouded with oak trees and surrounded by ponds and the Cooper River, this cemetery is full of beautifully-written odes to fallen soldiers - several sections are full of Civil War soldiers who died literally in the same battles. The Hunley submarine's mariners are here, as is designer Horace Hunley. The stones are elaborate and full of details. One can get a sense not only of how generations passed away but also of how they lived. This is a not-to-be missed opportunity to relive Civil War battles through the words and prayers of those who lost loved ones in it. Next door is St. Lawrence Cemetery (one can walk directly across as there is no fencing between them) which has long been the Irish Catholic cemetery of choice and which is full of rich details about the Irish Catholics of Charleston.

If you are into genealogy and/or history you MUST take the time to find and visit this place. Lots of civil war era burials. Beautiful, well kept, almost garden-like.

The gravestones were hauntingly beautiful. So different than what we see in the Midwest. Big family plots. Very old graves. Beautiful landscaping.
