Owner description: This beautiful church dates back to 1844 and is the only French Hugenot church in the country that still gives the liturgy in French.

I only saw it from the outside, but it's lovely! Ask a tour guide about the history of the church and why it's even here!

Having spent many Sunday afternoons at Charleston Stage productions at the Dock Street Theatre, I was aware of the Huguenot Church directly across the street but had never been in it. Fortunately my wife and I attended an excellent concert called "Before Flamenco" that was part of Piccolo Spoleto. Not only was the concert performed by a group called Brio with a wonderful singer Jose Lemos most enjoyable but being in this old church with excellent acoustics was an added bonus. The church was built in 1844 and is the oldest Gothic Revival church in South Carolina. Although the church interior is fairly simplistic it does contain a very impressive organ.

While on our way to see St. Phillips Church, (which was closed that day) we came across this lovely building and decided to go in. What a beautiful surprise. Our guide greeted us with a smile and a fascinating history lesson on this church. Built around 1845, this church is home to the only active Huguenot congregation in the country. After the grandeur of St. Michael's church (we had been there previously that day), this little building seemed rather plain, but still beautiful in its simplicity. We were actually glad that our original destination was closed so that we could spend the time here instead.

What a lovely church to step back in time. This is a cherished peace of history for Charleston and worth a stop in to see.

If you care anything about history, visit here and get one of the volunteers to tell you about this and answer your questions. Beautiful and serene. 1685 beginning in Charleston.
