“small but really great”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

We went for a special exhibit of Mary Whyte who is local. Her watercolors are spectacular. The museum is small but has local artists as well as well known. The veiled woman statue is a find.

“Small but wonderful”
Reviewed August 1, 2012

This is a lovely art museum with lots to see. It is in an old bank building with lots of local charm that is wonderful to wander through. Be sure to see the wonderful museum store with lovely gifts to remind you of your trip to Charleston.

“A wonderful collection of early American art plus modern exhibits”
Reviewed July 27, 2012

Gibbes has it all - classic early American art but 20th and 21st century exhibits as well. I especially like the collection of small portraiture. there's always something new to be discovered at the Gibbes.

“Beautiful Little Oasis of Provincial Art”
Reviewed July 4, 2012

Drawing visitors with a free gallery of a few historic artifacts, this charming art museum concentrates (wisely) on local artists and collections.

You will see works that make Charleston come alive in all its eras. The small Civil War gallery is quite good, and the marble statuary and busts are worth seeing. There's a very good oversize bust of General Washington. Upstairs are galleries for contemporary art.

Visitor gets a real taste of the local artistic milieu of Charleston, so this is wonderfully unique, daring to avoid the trap of vying to be a world-class collection concentrating too heavily on big names.

Decent gift shop.

“little gem of an art museum”
Reviewed June 15, 2012

A nice place to spend a quiet couple of hours, exploring this museum of art work primarily with a southern focus. There was an excellent exhibition of watercolor studies by renowned artist Mary Whyte of Southerners whose way of life was disappearing. An interesting gift shop and perhaps a cafe coming in the future according to the caretakers we talked to.
