It may take several tries, but you can locate the campus of the Citadel, just northwest of the city. It is worth the effort, especially if you can be on campus for the Friday formation of the Corps.

But is this the Citadel you seek? The current campus is relatively new. The old campus, originally the arsenal of Charleston, is now encased inside the Embassy Suites hotel in historic Charleston. Marion Park was the parade grounds.

The Citadel wasn't originally on our itinerary but we added it and sure glad we did. It is easy to find and we arrived just around 9 AM during the week. The pristine campus was empty and we went to the library to see if we needed to check in. There were young men and women in the library and the library staff was very courteous and helpful giving us brochures and such. We walked around the library which has very large photos of interest in the history of the school. When we left the library all of a sudden there were groves of military students coming from all the buildings. It was a really neat site. They all were dressed alike, carrying similar items and moving at almost exact paces as they transferred from one building to another. We couldn't keep our eyes off of how orderly they all were. Then in a few minutes they were all gone back into the buildings. We walked the entire campus (except dorms are not open to public) and parade grounds and the chapel is very lovely. There are flags representing all of the states. We would highly recommend putting this on your list of to go visit places. The only thing we didn't get to see, and would have loved to have seen, was the Friday afternoon parade. We left Charleston before that but if we ever return will make that a certain stop.

Went for parade day. The announcer did a nice job of explaining some of the traditions and history of the parades. Worth a visit. Free attraction. One yip- there is very little shade. Consider bringing a hat and something to drink.

I had heard of the Citadel over the years, but never visited it. While in Charleston recently, we discovered it is not far from the city center. Not a must, but if you have extra time while visiting Charleston, walk around the very large grass covered parade ground, and talk to a few cadets. You will come away impressed with the quality of the young people in attendance, and the overall attractiveness of their facilities.

When we visited Charleston with our two sons - ages 8 and 12, we decided to visit the Citadel for their weekly dress parade on Friday afternoons. It was well worth the visit. We were all mesmerized with the all the pomp and circumstance, the rifle drills, the cannons, the marching in formation, marching band, etc. It was a unique slice of Americana and unlike anything we'd ever seen before. Would highly recommend you add this to your plans if you'll be in Charleston on a Friday afternoon.
