When entering the Main Library up the front steps you'll likely walk through a gauntlet of cigarette smoking and spitting slobs, Once within the building you'll notice the smell of the overwhelmingly high percentage of the users who are homeless and who have ripened in the hot Charleston weather without benefit of a bath. I certainly don't blame the homeless for catching sleep in the study carrels, playing games on the public computers and chatting in the air conditioned comfort. Given similar circumstances I would do the same. I also don't blame the staff for exhibiting their indifferent attitude about service. It's obviously a grim and pointless work environment. The local history and children's areas offer reasonable services and collections but the rest of the departments generally offer only barren shelves and denizens of the street. Don't bother visiting.
