We thought we were starting here, based on the reviews on TA. Where we actually started was at a timeshare sales "welcome center" that is just across from the actual Vistor's Center. Don't make that mistake!

The "movie" at the center is only $2, and a nice intro to the history of Charleston. The ticket "agents" were very helpful in helping us determine whether we wanted to get combo tickets or not. And this was the only place that I found a brochure for "Museum Mile".

I'm glad we stopped here first. While we had done our research before arriving in Charleston, it is always great to get some firsthand information about a City. We picked up lots of brochures, got great suggestions about eateries, and even RSVP'd for a tour the next day. Stop there first, you won't regret it.

I have visited Charleston many times, but still often stop at the Visitor's Center. They have a large selection of brochures on lodging, dining, shopping, and attractions. You can also pick up a free map of the downtown area. This is a great place to buy tickets (at a discount) for area attractions. We saved $8 on each SC Aquarium ticket we purchased here. If you have any questions about Charleston, the staff are friendly and helpful. Many tours leave from the Visitor's Center so you can buy your tickets, grab a cold bottle of water from the gift shop, and begin your tour.

The visitor center is a great place to find brochures, info on tours, places to stay, etc. But for my money, the best thing you can do here is to buy a one-day ticket to the trolley. You can get off and on anywhere the trolley goes (and there are several routes you can use to criss cross the downtown) for the same low price - not sure what it is now, but I know it's very cheap. The only problem you may run into is that not every stop noted on the brochure is a place where the trolleys will actually stop. The visitor center needs to do a better job of noting these stops or putting ups signs at the stops, or making sure the trolley drivers actually stop when they are supposed to. One more piece of advise - the trolleys don't go south of Broad street, and this is the area with the best houses and gardens. So if you take the trolley as far south as you can, then get off and do some exploring on foot, you'll be well rewarded. One extra perk of heading south - not as many tourists! They don't like to walk, especially in the summer heat.

This is the place to start your vacation. Everyone is so helpful. You can book tours and parking is very reasonable. I had read online about the Charleston Explorers for kids. This is the place to get started. The kids get a passport and a great backpack. They can receive stamps at various places throughout the city which in turn, can earn them prizes. Was a hit with my kids...kept them interested. I did hear othe kids ask there swhy they didn't get a bag. If you have young ones, sign them up for this free activity:)
