“Southern comfort in downtown Charleston”
Reviewed October 1, 2013

The historic George IV Inn in downtown Charleston was a perfect base for our first visit to this charming city. Our room, which was full of antique furniture, was large and comfortable with plenty of storage, high ceilings and a door to the lovely verandah, plus a kitchen with sink and fridge, and bathroom with old-fashioned free-standing bath. It was on the third floor, so we had stairs to climb, but that kept us fit! Terry Flowers and his team were southern hospitality personified, and always ready with helpful information and advice. And the central location meant we could walk nearly everywhere or pick up one of the free buses. Breakfasts were excellent and we had access to the kitchen facilities throughout the day for tea, coffee, cold drinks and snacks.
Being an old house, sound insulation was minimal. We did hear other guests moving around in the room above ours - sometimes in the wee small hours - but it was probably the same for the guests underneath us. The inn is next door to College of Charleston buildings which meant we were woken by lively students from 6.30am and George Street does get some noisy traffic, but somehow we weren't bothered by any of this because we were enjoying ourselves so much.
Charleston is full of large chain hotels, but we recommend the George IV Inn for a taste of the real Charleston.

Room Tip: We had Room 5 on the third floor (out of four).

What a wonderful stay in this beautiful city. Our room was on the third floor with a shared veranda in what is a typical Charleston Single House. Our room was very large and spacious and beautifully decorated in shades or green and red.The room also had a well sized bathroom with plenty of fluffy clean towels and a small kitchen/coffee room with a desk, as well as use of the verandah . The bed was as comfortable a bed as I have ever slept in. Breakfast was a communal affair which was fun and delicious.Hosts and staff alike were warm and friendly. I would definitely stay there again next time I am in Charleston.

Room Tip: The stairs are quite steep and if you have heavy luggage may be an issue.

The King George IV Inn is architecturally similar to many historic buildings in Charleston. Our room had a sitting room which was really good and we were grateful for that. The breakfast was alright but not spectacular. It set us up for the day. There are plenty of eating and dining places nearby especially on King St and Miss Charlene's recommendations were excellent. It was a clean and comfortable place.

The beds were comfortable and the rooms are spacious. There is enough parking for one car per room. The location is great -- steps from King and not far at all from East Bay. The rate was better than the Best Western.

Do yourself a favor and skip breakfast; it sucks. Flavorless eggs, thin bacon, frozen waffles, and watery coffee are on the menu. There are so many amazing places to eat in Charleston that it's a waste of calories to eat here. Also, Terry stands around and stares at you and he's a little argumentative. Charlene is awesome.

I would stay here again but based on the rate, cleanliness, and the location. It's a base camp for your stay in a beautiful town.

Room Tip: Top floor shares a bathroom and there's no elevator. If you have mobility issues, get a ground f...

A block from King Street, right in the heart of Historic Downtown Charleston. Great nearby restaurants, all the culture you can ever want just steps away. Terry and Debra are the best hosts I have ever experienced at a B&B. Lots of excellent suggestions and there to answer any of our questions.
The rooms are all amazing. We were lucky enough to stay in 3 different rooms during our 3 nights stay. Each one with its own unique character and charm.

My daughter and I spent a long weekend at the inn recently. Debra and Terry are wonderful hosts and Charlene is a delight as well. Our room was huge and beautiful. There isn't a true common parlor on the ground floor but my daughter and I didn't mind at all. The breakfasts were delicious and plentiful. Can't beat the location; right off of King Street, a fairly short walk to the Market. Highly recommend!

incredible home, PERFECT!! location, incredible staff and couldn't have been a better stay. So close to everything, nice to find a place with on site parking too. Breakfast was great every morning, and we loved enjoying the numerous outdoor sitting areas at night.

Room Tip: ANY OF THEM!! toured the whole house, not a bad room.
