We came to the Planters Inn after having done much research and frankly kind of got stuck here because many other hotels, bed and breakfasts, and historic inns were sold out for graduation weekend. Pictures of Charleston’s genteel courtyards evoke visions of grass, beds of flowers and gates. The minimal amount of pictures on the website imply your $899 per night (+14% occupancy tax!) courtyard garden suite will be quiet and intimate. Far from it in 319! The Courtyard ends at the entrance to the Peninsula Grill and then becomes a concrete back alleyway of sorts with a fountain in the middle. Now we know why no pictures of the exterior building where these suites exist, are on the website in full view. Our beautifully appointed Garden Courtyard Suite was comfortable and bright however, came replete with visuals of the constant noisy air handlers on top of their restaurant, dumpster area (Saturday 5:23am pickup and slam down was our wake up), and parking lot which doubled as the smoking area for employees and patrons of the Peninsula Grill. Funny our room on the butt-end of the building was non smoking, however we could still smell smoke coming through. As we were told politely it is the brightest suite with 7 windows, we wondered if this is their room of choice for weekenders from the North. We addressed our concerns onsite with staff and were offered to either take a room in main building or wait until next day to move one room in from the end. Thankfully Charleston being as beautiful as it is on a sunny weekend, negated our resentment at this room placement, so we did not move but instead chose to spend as much time as possible out of it. I will say management did call us during our stay to follow up, and as well at checkout, but frankly we should not have been put in this position to begin with especially after booking directly with the hotel, buying a premium room and making a special request for a quiet room on a separate pre arrival phone call. Very Non-Relais and Chateaux!

Peninsula Grill was as close to pure perfection as Relais & Chateaux properties used to demand. A grand slam home run in terms of service, food, and wine selection, this is an experience one should not miss in Charleston. Our special event was recognized at the end of dinner and this evening alone made our room issue seem distant. The public spaces of the hotel lobby were nice and felt exclusive but welcoming. Sitting room offered coffee and tea in the am. The hotel is centrally located to carriage companies, Slave market, King street, and East Bay St. restaurants. Concierge was excellent and offered great suggestions. In fact all staff we encountered were consummate professionals and in-spite of their crappy “hand-selected” room for us, are the main asset of this hotel and perhaps the main reason it remains open. If we come back on a non graduation weekend, with all the quaint accommodations Charleston has on offer, we would not chose to stay here but certainly will return to Peninsula Grill. Was hoping to leave a much cheerier review. Employees here are the only reason I did not leave an average rating.

Dear palmster,

First and most importantly, I'm very sorry to learn your expectations were not exceeded. Second, thank you for taking the time to share this very detailed feedback. We are passionate about providing warm and wonderful hospitality along with a serene setting, and it is exceedingly helpful to understand what resonates most strongly with our guests. While the new Garden Courtyard Suites have proven to be exceptionally popular and frequently sold out, we have 12 other room types that may be more suited to your tastes. It would be our distinct pleasure to assist you with accommodations that will be most pleasing for a return visit to Planters Inn.

Our colleagues at Peninsula Grill were delighted to know you described your dinner experience as "close to pure perfection" and a "grand slam home run." They assure you that your next visit will be equally fabulous!

Sincerely,
Tristan and the Planters Inn Guest Services Team

We had a short but lovely stay at the Planters Inn. The Hotel is expensive but beautiful, the staff are very friendly and helpful and there is a wonderful restaurant in the hotel that serves delicious food. The location is unbeatable! The hotel entrance is a bit confusing as your only option is to park on the street in front of the hotel but while you check in, hotel staff unloads your luggage and valet parks your car.

Great stay in Charleston, SC. From dinners, drinks & coconut cake at the Peninsula Grill and the arranged walking tours of historic Charleston, our stay at Planters Inn was a great beginning for cruise north on the Intracoastal Waterway.
