“Romantic Little Gem”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

We really enjoyed this beautiful inn right in the heart of downtown Charleston. Located right off the corner of Market and Meeting the location couldn't have been better. Everyone we encountered at the hotel was extremely helpful and friendly from the valet to the people you would pass in the hall. It makes a difference. There is a living room area in the front furnished with antiques and has a buffet that is laid out with coffee and tea service. We stayed in the Governor's Suite and it was really wonderful. There was a large sitting area with fireplace, sofa and chairs decorated with mixed period pieces. Romantic and cozy. The separate bedroom with king bed was pretty, well furnished and very comfortable. The bathroom was updated with marble and pedestal sink and of a good size. All in all the room was beautiful. We dined in the Peninsula Grill and it was a fabulous experience. The room is elegant and sexy with brown velvet walls and period portraits. Service was outstanding and the food was amazing! Great evening. Hate to rave on and on, but it was all well deserved. This is a great choice for a romantic stay.

My husband and I stayed at the Planter's Inn for 4 nights to celebrate our anniversary. From the moment we walked in, we felt very welcome. They allowed us to check in early. The valet, Josh, was very helpful. He took our bags, parked our car and told us the hotel was chilling a bottle of champagne for us and we could have it at anytime.

Our room was beautiful and comfortable. The little details meant so much - from the champagne to the bathrobes provided to the little sweets on our bed that was turned down while we were out. All of this added up to a marvelous experience.

The reason we did not give it 5 stars, was 3 out of the 4 mornings, the room service forgot something for our breakfast. They always made it right though. The continental breakfast was delicious.

This is a nice property, but I was slightly disappointed in it. Our room, a deluxe king, was very average in size and decor. I booked the room on the Internet and thought I was getting something different. I thought it opened up to a shared balcony and overlooked a courtyard but our room overlooked the street. I did ask the the front desk about it but they said that was what I booked. They showed me a different room (in the same category) but it was worst than the one I had. I also thought the bathroom was upgraded but it was not. Overall the room was not as nice as what we are used to. On a positive note, the front desk was very helpful in recommending attractions and restaurants. And, the hotel is conveniently located.

Dear Knspr,
We appreciate your feedback and are pleased to hear you found our service and staff attentive to your concierge related concerns and guest room inquiries. As you describe, our Deluxe King rooms offer the “shared piazza”; some of which include a courtyard location, while others offer views of the historic market with entry doors that share the piazza terrace. These rooms are popular for enjoying the mornings for breakfast and evenings for an afternoon beverage. The second floor of our piazza includes an even larger shared space that many utilize to simple read and relax. We are happy to offer seven other room categories and perhaps we can help you find a location that best suits your preference on your next visit to Charleston.

Planter's Inn is located at the corner of Meeting and Market Streets, a great location. Staff is very attentive and excels in trying to please you. The furnishings and decor are definitely in the flavor of old Charleston, and are well done. In house restaurant, Peninsula Grill, is fine. We were in main building, but there is another building attached. This is a quiet, non-business place which is a great plus, compared to the larger hotels.

Thank you for taking a moment to share your recent comments as we appreciate your view point and are pleased to read you enjoyed our “boutique Inn” and “great location”. As you suggest, our 64 rooms offer a perfect respite in the heart of the historic district and a very comfortable size property that offers the warmth and charm not found in many of the areas neighboring properties. The Planters Inn is probably my all time favorite city hotel in the USA. It reminds me of some of the finest small inns and hotels we have visited in France, Italy, England and Switzerland. The historic building has been renovated to a very high standard with large, comfortable rooms.

Our Plantation King was very large. I'd guess about 500sf. There was a very comfortable king with an attractive antique bench at the foot of the bed. There was a cozy sitting area with two great upholstered chairs and an ottoman. A large desk and a chest large enough to hold most of our stuff along with a large flat screen made the room very comfortable. The bathroom was large as was the closet. A/C did its job in record setting outdoor temperatures.

Evening turndown service never missed, including fresh ice and bottles of water, fresh towels, etc. WiFi reception was a little spotty, a victum of the thick walls of the old building.

We thought the service was clearly up to the great standards of Relais and Chateaux established in Europe and frankly, not always met in the US. The hotel's location is at the 100% corner of Charleston. And then there is our favorite restaurant in town just off the lobby, The Peninsula Grill.

Great room, exceptional service, the best possible location and a world class restaurant; that's the Planters Inn in Charleston.

I stayed at Planter's Inn Labor Day week in a Penthouse King room. It's the top floor of the main building and has a balcony overlooking Market Street. While the views are of the city, they are not spectacular. However, it was very nice to open the door to my room, step outside, and sit in the wrought iron chairs under the umbrella, or on the rocking bench. The rooms are very well decorated/maintained in period furnishings and feel incredibly comfortable despite the formality. The bathrooms have a long marble vanity, soaking tub and spacious shower, with plantation shutters covering the windows. Nice style. Housekeeping and turndown services were excellent. The only things stopping me from rating the hotel 5 stars are:

1) There is a single room for gathering in the hotel lobby, and the check-in desk is off to the side of the entrance (guests are passing by you down the hall as you are checking in) - this creates a feeling that the space is a bit cramped.
2) The on-site restaurant does a continental breakfast with hot items you can add (but you can do better at one of the restaurants downtown), not sure if lunch is served, and room service consists of the very expensive Peninsula Grill and an Italian restaurant next door (Mercato) that will run over an order to you.
3) While the bell desk staff was outstanding, the front desk service was a bit cool and not what I would expect for the prices the hotel charges.

Room Tip: Choose the main building (not ground floor) facing Market Street, Plantation or Penthouse King

Dear NeverLoseUrPlace,

Thank you for sharing your views and suggestions following your recent visit. We are pleased you were able to enjoy our Penthouse King room, as it is one of our finest accommodations that is a true representation of our Relais & Chateaux circa 1844 property. The charm and character of our property is apparent from the quaint parlor sitting area to beautiful heart of pine floors as you enter. The interior design is quintessential Charleston and completely in harmony with the “feel” of our property from Peninsula Grill to the guest spaces. We appreciate your compliments to our various staff members and thank you for added suggestions; as we always welcome feedback from our guests on how we may improve any aspect of our operation.

Kind Regards,

The staff at this hotel prioritizes and delivers total guest satisfaction. From the reservation experience to the final checkout, our family was extremely pleased with the professionalism, positive attitude and guest appreciation we experienced. These people don't have NO in their vocabulary. The hotel is small enough that we met many of the management staff during our visit. They too were genuinely interested in making our family welcome and satisfied in all aspects of our visit to Charleston, SC. We highly recommend this luxurious and high quality hotel and restaurant combination. The Peninsula Grill is a "fine dining" must during your visit!

Room Tip: Just ask the staff for their recommendation based on your specific needs.
