“Impeccable, friendly service”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

There was lots of traffic as we tried to pull up to the Planter's Inn earlyone evening. With no parking places available for unloading, we were ready to take a tedious trip around the block. Out of nowhere, a valet appeared and quickly rescued us. We jumped out, he jumped in and that was that. The car was whisked away and we were in our room within five minutes. Everything at the Inn is efficient ... and gracious. From the desk to the bartender ... From the restaurant servers to the turndown maids, service is friendly and absolutely on-target. The location is fantastic for restaurants, historical sites, shopping, etc. The rooms are charming and VERY comfortable. This is an historic property, but it is in great shape.

Room Tip: We stayed in the piazza building, where rooms were quieter than being on Market Street. This is a b...

My fiancé and I stayed at the Planters Inn for the week of our wedding/honeymoon and we were thrilled with our room, the service, the staff, and the hotel as a whole. I started planning for the event about eight weeks in advance and got excellent vendor recommendations from Kara at the front desk. More than that, she answered every question I had, looking up the information for me if she didn't know it off the top of her head, and getting back to me via email or phone promptly. She made restaurant and carriage reservations for us, ordered flowers, and arranged to have champagne waiting for us after our ceremony. I felt like we had our own personal wedding planner. Everyone at the hotel was super courteous and helpful throughout our stay. The bellmen unloaded and loaded our car that was packed from top to bottom, were very gentle with my wedding dress and my fiance's tuxedo, and even got us special packaging to be able to transport our flowers. The hotel entrance and lobby were so welcoming with a huge, gorgeous arrangement of fresh flowers, refreshments in the morning and afternoon, and a very elegant, comfortable sitting area. Even though we were in the historic part of the hotel that was built in 1844, our room looked newly renovated and painted, the bathroom was large and modern, but the feeling was cozy and historical. The bed was the most comfortable I've ever slept in, and the location of the hotel could not be better--right in the heart of the historic district, a block from the high-end shops along King and a short walk from the waterfront park. Absolutely charming. If we had to do it all again, we would not change one thing. Thank you Kara and the rest of the staff for making our wedding week absolutely perfect.

Hotel is very nice but if your room
Faces Market street you will hear
Lots of street noise. You are in the
Middle of the city but they power wash
The sidewalks of the market across
The street so u will hear the relentless
Generator from about 1:00Am till
2:00 Am, quite annoying especially if
U want to sleep a little before having
A great next day in the best city in the
US.....
Just ask not to face market street!!!!!
You will enjoy,..

Dear CaptivaSun,
We appreciate your feedback and suggestions on room location selections. It is true many of our rooms face the historic City Market. We have confirmed the noise you experienced of “power washing” was indeed a private company and a unique situation; not the city of Charleston cleaning the streets and sidewalks as we had suspected. We are happy you enjoyed our city the next day and hope you give us another opportunity on your next trip to Charleston and we will be happy to find a courtyard location on your return trip.

If you are looking for a hotel in the historic district of Charleston that provides elegance and sophistication yet is casual and friendly look no further. The hotel provides clean and beautifully appointed rooms in a renovated 18th century building. Try to avoid second floor rooms that face the street and/or have antique street lamps out side of the windows. While not a problem for most people could pose a sleeping issue for others. Hotel staff and Peninsula Grill are extremely well trained and hospitable. If you want the history and quaintness of Charleston to extend to your hotel Planters Inn is for you.

Room Tip: Grand Kings and Plantation Kings are wonderful. Ask for a room with a fireplace if desired. Spurge a...

Dear TNMarine,
“Casual Elegance”…. An appropriate and much appreciated description of our property. We are pleased to read you enjoyed our service and the dining experience of Peninsula Grill during your visit. Your street side suggestion should include a note that our many of our guests rooms include interior shutters for additional privacy from light and sounds to make your stay more enjoyable. Planters Inn and Peninsula Grill offer guest a relaxing retreat in the heart of Charleston’s historic district; however our service simply makes a return visit a must! On behalf of our team, we look forward to your next visit.

3 star hotel in a 5 star location. It feels like they need to refresh the rooms. I have stayed here many times and the rooms can really vary. We couldn't stay in the balcony rooms as requested at reservation because they didn't have any roll aways or rooms with 2 beds.

Room Tip: I prefer the rooms not in the main hotel, facing courtyard

Dear Todd-Shenadoah,
As frequent guests, you are somewhat familiar with our vast array of room categories. From your recent review, it appears you may have experienced our one and only double queen room located in the piazza building on a previous visit. It is unfortunate we were unable to accommodate a request for this location on your recent trip; however we always strive to note and deliver on preferred locations or even favorite room numbers for our return guests. Many of our return guests have their “favorites” and we strive to secure such requests during the reservation process at every opportunity. We are confident in our ranking and proudly make continual upgrades to our property, rooms, and physical plant.
Allow me to assist you with securing your favorite location on the courtyard for your next visit and I’m confident you will be welcomed back to the room you prefer.
Best Wishes,

Planters Inn is made great by the people. Everyone we met was very friendly and helpful. Many places have friendly and helpful people on their staff. Planters Inn is exceptional because the people are alert to ways they can be helpful. They are not focused on their computer screen until you stop in front of them they are alert to your approach.

It's difficult to describe the facility. It's not a luxury resort nor does it pretend to be. It's historic downtown Charleston not Las Vegas. It's a perfect old hotel in a beautiful old city. It fits perfectly in its surroundings. There is so much to do and see within steps of the front door and so many wonderful places to eat. The Peninsula Grill in the hotel lobby was a special treat. The food was incredible, the staff enjoyed what they do and seemed proud of their food and service. They added something special to the dining. Guests of the hotel are made to feel part of the family. The staff knows who you are. They seem pleased that you chose to stay and eat with them while in a city full of so many eating choices.

We stayed at the hotel for four nights. There was never a moment where we were uncomfortable.

Room Tip: The hotel spans the width of a city block. Rooms on the road opposite the front entrance suffer earl...

Here is my thought.......average room.......no real room service available....continental in the morning...did that one morning and half of the breakfast was missing? they will do evening room service but strongly recommend visiting the peninsula grill....My opinion...I like room service in the morning.....there is no where in the hotel to get a snack in the mid day....you have to go out on the street...usually crowded. Our room was cleaned inconsistently some times great other times not so......
doubt we would stay again....will try the Charleston place....comes highly recommended.
