Owner description: There's no better way to see historic Charleston than from the vantage point of an Old South Carriage. Family owned and operated since 1983, Old South Carriage Company offers fully narrated hour-long tours by licensed guides wearing the Confederate uniform with the Red Sash. Come to our English-style stable at 14 Anson Street, just 2 blocks from The City Market and meet our friendly and professional staff. Reservations are not necessary as tours depart every 20 - 30 minutes throughout the day. A ramp leading to a platform makes boarding easy. Old South Carriage Company uses French Percherons and Belgian Draft horses. These sturdy employees vacation at Sugah Cain, the owner's 65-acre plantation on John's Island. For 2-3 months annually, these beautiful horses are free to run in large pastures or leisurely graze under century-old live oaks. Tours operate daily from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 (DST) 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (EST). ~Look for the Red Sash~ Our symbol of a quality horse-drawn carriage tour of Charleston, South Carolina.

“Informative yet relaxing”
Reviewed October 19, 2013

Take the carriage tour of Charleston first, then you can decide what things you want to see in more depth. The tour is at a leisurely pace - plenty of time to take pictures and learn lots of history. Our guide, Evans, was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He stopped whenever someone wanted to snap a picture and even offered to back up if needed for a picture. He gave great suggestions on other attractions to visit. Evans and Ralph the horse make a great team.

“Fun Ride”

This turned out to be a really fun trip. Our guide was very well informed and had a great sense of humor. We loved her little historical anecdotes and learned a lot about Charleston's history.

“Enjoyed the ride”

All the carriage rides go to the same booth on Market Street where they have a city employee draw a ball out of a machine which determines where your tour will go. Some tours are better than others but you have no way of knowing before you board where you will be taken. We still enjoyed our tour and guide, but I think there were other areas which would have been better.

“Great guide and comfortable way to explore”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

Picked this carriage company as they have a ramp to board the carriage at the barn. Guide was licensed and very informative and apparently they write their own scripts for color commentary. Good way to cover quite a bit of ground. We tried driving during the day through the historic parts of the city -- don't try it during peak seasons. Take the carriage ride. The only caveat - and this is not something the carriage companies have jurisdiction over - is that there are several routes and the carriage pulls up to a small booth and gets a tag that assigns it to a certain route at the time of departure. The city tries to gate the number of carriages on each route to keep it manageable. So you don't get to pick the route you are going to see in advance. Be aware so you are not disappointed at not seeing the rainbow houses for example. You see very interesting stuff on every route. And it's right around the corner from Harry's which is a lovely bar if your throat gets dry during the trip.
