“Not Five Star Accommodations”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 29, 2013

We were drawn to this hotel by the reviews of other travelers. It is over rated as a small luxury hotel for the accommodations. For the rates charged you should receive outstanding accommodations and service. What you are paying for is to stay in an 1886 converted mansion. For $500 a night (incl. tax), Mansion Suite, you should not have to ask for turn down service and if you would like slippers you shouldn't have to request them as the note instructs hanging on the robes in the amour. We found the room to be spacious but very dark and a little dirty and dusty. The shower floor was in need of repairs, (see photo), missing grout, and mold. The overhead shower light did not work and their labeled "night light" was out of order. The bathroom molding next to the mirror was dirty. It had not been wiped down in a long time. I even wiped the right side (see photo) to see if I was really seeing the dirt, I was. A note was still lying on the night stand when we arrived for the previous guests indicating maintenance had repaired the shower drain clog.
I wanted to sit and read the paper in the evening in one of the two overstuffed chairs. There was no lamp on the table in between. On further inspection there was no electrical plug for a lamp. Your choice was to sit at the desk or lay in bed. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable in answering our questions for dinner or on activities. They deserve the five star rating.
Breakfast is included with your stay which is served in the Circa 1886 restaurant located across the courtyard. The service was excellent and a very nice breakfast selection. It was the accommodations which were below a 5 star room.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at the Wentworth Mansion. Your notes about our superior staff and Circa 1886 Restaurant are greatly appreciated. We wish that you would have brought these concerns to our attention during your stay. We would have done everything in our power to eliminate the issues and turn your visit around. I am sorry to read about your dissatisfaction with housekeeping. We have since addressed these issues. I am also sorry that you were unable to read in the chairs provided. The light from the full windows surrounding the sitting area is typically enough for guests to enjoy this space, however we are looking at ways to improve this. We have a few shower renovations scheduled for the summer and thank you for your feedback. We take all guest comments very seriously and strive to deliver a five star experience in every area.

Sincerely, Richard Widman, Proprietor

My brother-in-law and I both turned 40 this month and we decided to go to Charleston to celebrate the occasion for a long Memorial Day weekend. As a group, we booked three rooms at the Wentworth Mansion. The first item that bears mentioning is the service. We were met at our taxi by a team of staff, one to greet, one to show us around the property, and one to deliver the bags to the room. The whole weekend, the staff was friendly, attentive, and highly competent. Everyone called us by our names and was very helpful fielding a variety of questions and requests. The housekeeping staff noticed that my sister-in-law was pregnant and left her a infant-sized t-shirt as a thank you and also left a commemorative shirt for my three-year-old daughter who was staying in the third room.

The rooms were well appointed with modern fixtures, yet still maintained a classic feel. Our room was on the 4th floor of the oldest part of the mansion and had a bathtub that was separate from the bathroom area. It was located under a bay window and came complete with bath salts and jets.

Breakfast was complimentary and could be ordered from a menu. Breakfast was served at the mansion's restaurant, Circa 1886, which is also very highly rated. The bacon and sausage were among the best I have every eaten.

All in all this was the perfect hotel for our destination weekend. My wife and I were remarking that we would have loved one full day of just staying in at the Mansion, ordering food from Circa and not leaving the property for a whole day.

This lovely mansion has been restored with a care that preserves its original
spirit. The rooms are lovely and the bathrooms sumptuous. The breakfast
and 5 o'clock 'cheese & wine' are so much more than one is used to.
In all the effects it is much more than a B&B - more like a small boutique
5 star hotel. But its true secret is its staff: nothing is ever too much and
a everything is always dealt with a smile.

Excellent room, service, and dining. Fifth floor viewing area is great. Stairs to lobby may be a problem for some seniors. Walking to major shopping and historic sites. Circa 1886 restaurant puts on good breakfasts and has $42 three course dinners for guests -- a great value.

Room Tip: great views on fourth floor

this place is thoughtful, elegant, tasteful, and very comfortable. We stayed in the main building (there are 3 rooms in the "east wing"). Our room had tall ceilings and very comfortable furniture.
I will say if you want to delegate things like dinner reservations etc. than the concierge is the way to go. They did a great job for us.
although not cheap, this is a great example of you get what you pay for. Beautiful room, great service and not in the tourist center but near enough to most things that you can walk there.
the young staff make a very concerted effort to help you with anything you need.
They are part of the SLH group which is an endorsement in and of itself as we have never had a bad experience at one.
this is an intimate but not small place (mansion) and the hospitality only adds to its charm.
although they don't brag about it their restaurant is also excellent and the complimentary breakfast is outstanding.....very good danish also!
they have a complete Spa but we did not use it...I have only heard good things about it

Room Tip: I think if you tell them what you want they will place you in the best room for your needs, i.e., lo...

Absolutely gorgeous historic inn/ small hotel. Beautifully restored and decorated. The room was just beautiful. The breakfast each day was delicious and delightful. We also had dinner at the inn's restaurant which was equally great. Terrific staff who were always available and very helpful. Overall just a charming delightful experience.

This is clearly not a hotel for everyone. But, if you think you would enjoy an experience in a historical hotel this would be an excellent choice. The staff could not possibly be warmer as they all exuded "southern hospitality". Our room was comfortable, clean and well decorated. It was a beautiful ten minute stroll to our dinner in the main part of the city and walking through the neighborhood was enjoyable.
The linens and towels were first rate and this very old hotel has plenty of charm. If you decide to stay at the Wentworth, make sure you enjoy their amazing breakfast served in a charming restaurant. This was a very good stay, and my wife and I decided that when we returned to Charleston we would definitely book this wonderful hotel again.
