After reading the reviews and being married to a history major, I decided to book two days at the Rutledge House for us. The general staff was wonderful and very accommodating. We were told that our room was on the first floor when reservations were made, but it was actually down a short flight of stairs. The room was large and lovely (no view), but it hadn't been dusted. I have lived in older homes, and I know it is hard to keep them dust free, but it was easy to tell that this room hadn't been dusted recently. The first day breakfast was wonderful (in the breakfast room) and our waiter was excellent, excellent, excellent! We reserved breakfast time again for the second day. When we arrived for the time booked, (along with another couple) we were all informed that the other guests were running late and they would not be able to seat us, but they would send our meal to our room. When we asked how long would the wait be, we were told that we could not wait as it would "interfere with later reservations." So, we returned to our room. When our breakfast arrived, the server placed the tray (with all items covered) on a table and immediately left. It wasn't our breakfast. We called and an apology was given and our breakfast was delivered. Again, the server simply dropped off the tray and left. While it was our breakfast this time, it was missing several items (milk, toast, etc.). I called and again an apology was given and I was told the items would be delivered, but they never were. While breakfast may have been a hit or a miss, the afternoon tea was delightful with a large assortment of goodies. When making reservations, ask for additional directions to their parking lot (off of a side street). We passed numerous times in front of the hotel and the valet spot was always filled. We called and they told us about the parking lot. We parked and they sent someone to get our bags. The another perk is the location of the House. We could easily walk to shopping and restaurants.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- America's Most Historic Inn. John Rutledge, one of the fifty-five signers of the U.S. Constitution, built his home in 1763. Now exquisitely restored, it is one of only fifteen homes belonging to those signers to survive - and the only one to now accommodate overnight hotel guests. History records that George Washington called here in 1791. An entry in his diary shows a breakfast with Mrs. Rutledge. A loving rejuvenation has restored the beautiful details of the home's 18th and 19th century architecture: the elaborately carved Italian marble fireplaces, the original plaster moldings, the inlaid floors and the graceful ironwork. The John Rutledge House Inn offers nineteen guest rooms within a complex of three buildings. One may choose between the elegance of rooms and spacious suites in the original grand residence or the charm and seclusion of rooms in the inn's two carriage houses. Antiques and historically accurate reproductions give each room its own warmth and distinction. John Rutledge House Inn is proud to be a founding hotel in Historic Hotels of America, as well as Select Registry - Distinguished Inns of America and Classic Inns of the South. Guests may leave cars parked on-site for their entire stay because the best of this beautiful port city is just beyond the doors of the John Rutledge House Inn. The city's finest restaurants, theaters, shops, and the Old City Market are all in short walking distance. The gorgeous residential area "South of Broad" begins directly opposite the Inn. A stay in this elegant antebellum bed and breakfast offers the opportunity to experience history as well as the warm hospitality for which the South is justly famous. ... more less
