“Best Trip in Years!”
Reviewed October 10, 2008

We usually stay at another fine hotel in Charleston but they recently changed their policy regarding well mannered pets. We have a wonderful little lap dog that goes with us when we vacation so I set out to find a fine hotel in a top location in Charleston. The John Rutledge House was top ranked by CondeNast. I called and inquired. A very helpful young man answered all my questions and rearranged some guest accommodations to give me exactly what I desired for the dates I needed. The carriage house room exceeded our expectations and the Tempur-Pedic mattress was a dream to sleep on (we have one at home, so we slept as good as in our own bed). Our room was conveniently located on the Inn's grounds and we could easily walk every place we wanted to go in Charleston. The complimentary breakfast was delicious and piping hot when it arrived each morning at our doorstep! We also enjoyed the lovely patio for our one late morning breakfast. The room was spotless and tastefully decorated. Every one of the young people who staffed the concierge and reception desk were knowledgeable and gracious. They even provided great directions when we needed them. We had a wonderful and relaxing stay. We may never try another place in Charleston.

  • Liked — Beautifully decorated, maintained & staffed.
  • Disliked — Nothing- and as my daughter asked "You mean you liked the first room they gave you?!?"

Gorgeous room in the historic carriage house. Breakfast is fine but not really special. However, the location is wonderful and the history of the house is tremendous. It is a great, relaxing oasis in the city. We extended our stay here. Staff was very helpful and pleasant.

If you're looking to enjoy the historic city of Charleston, SC, you could do much worse than the beautiful John Rutledge House Inn. The room was amazing, the only -ve would be some traffic noise. Very sweet though, amazing decor.
Highly recommended.

My husband & I spent only one night at The Rutledge House. It was a quick business trip mixed with some well-deserved luxury. We enjoyed everything about JRH. Our room was beautifully decorated and had every convenience. We were surprised to find a mini fridge hidden nicely in the room. The staff was very attentive and more than ready to answer any questions. After the evening tea in the ballroom it was time to get ready for dinner. We walked to Slightly North of Broad. Food was to die for. We walked back to the hotel and enjoyed looking at the artifacts and scrap books that let us get a glimpse back into the past when John Rutledge and his wife lived in the house. We were fascinated by all we read and saw. We would recommend JRH to everyone who reads this. We felt as though we were "at home" even though we were surrounded by strangers (friendly stranger).

I just returned from Charleston where we spent Sisters Weekend. The Inn was cute and historic. The hotel staff was helpful and pleasant. The breakfast was nice too. However, we were shocked at the rudeness of the Inn Keeper.
Upon our arrival the Inn Keeper came to our door and very rudely confronted us about booking through Expedia. Our reservation defaulted to 1 guest (rather than 3), since we had 1 plane ticket. She told us we were responsible for paying for $150 extra to cover the cost of the other 2 guests. After looking into it on the hotels website) we found that their rates are to include 2 guests, so we confronted her and ended up paying extra for a 3rd guest. Regardless, she was so rude and seemed to talk down to us (we figured it was because we were three younger girls). She could have given us the same information in a nice and kind way.
She never came back to check on us, or see how our stay was.
Then to top everything off- we were in the main house (Room 2), and had a ton of traffic by our window, also workers stood outside our window on their breaks and would talk quite loud.
The shower was either scolding hot or freezing cold. I never took a nice shower-- always rushed in and out . I was disappointed that we had to carry all of our luggage to and from the cars, especially going up and down a bunch of stairs. Next time I visit Charleston I will find a new place to stay.

  • Liked — breakfast and conierce
  • Disliked — Inn Keeper, no privacy, shower

We stayed at the historically significant John Rutledge House Inn during our first visit through the south and were pleased with the accommodations and location. We had a huge room in the main house and our friends had a lovely room in the Carriage House. Breakfast was delicious and we had a choice of having it served upstairs in the beautiful (former) ballroom, outdoors on the patio or in our room. The helpful staff made dinner reservations for us and provided info on sightseeing. Charleston was a lovely city--we hope to return and would stay at the Rutledge House again. Official Description (provided by the hotel):
America's Most Historic Inn. John Rutledge, one of the fifty-five signers of the U.S. Constitution, built his home in 1763. Now exquisitely restored, it is one of only fifteen homes belonging to those signers to survive - and the only one to now accommodate overnight hotel guests. History records that George Washington called here in 1791. An entry in his diary shows a breakfast with Mrs. Rutledge. A loving rejuvenation has restored the beautiful details of the home's 18th and 19th century architecture: the elaborately carved Italian marble fireplaces, the original plaster moldings, the inlaid floors and the graceful ironwork. The John Rutledge House Inn offers nineteen guest rooms within a complex of three buildings. One may choose between the elegance of rooms and spacious suites in the original grand residence or the charm and seclusion of rooms in the inn's two carriage houses. Antiques and historically accurate reproductions give each room its own warmth and distinction. John Rutledge House Inn is proud to be a founding hotel in Historic Hotels of America, as well as Select Registry - Distinguished Inns of America and Classic Inns of the South. Guests may leave cars parked on-site for their entire stay because the best of this beautiful port city is just beyond the doors of the John Rutledge House Inn. The city's finest restaurants, theaters, shops, and the Old City Market are all in short walking distance. The gorgeous residential area "South of Broad" begins directly opposite the Inn. A stay in this elegant antebellum bed and breakfast offers the opportunity to experience history as well as the warm hospitality for which the South is justly famous. ... more   less
