Description: The Glass Onion is one of Charleston’s original home grown, locally focused, all-natural restaurants. Owner and Executive Chef Chris Stewart opened the restaurant in 2008 with fellow culinary colleagues. It was one of the first places in town to support local farmers and purveyors with almost every dish and drink. An eighth generation Alabama native, Stewart’s love and appreciation of southern food shows through his menu. His restaurant boasts comfort food that reflects his time growing up in Alabama, as well as New Orleans and Lowcountry influences. The ever-evolving menu changes daily and features as many local, all natural, hormone-free ingredients as possible. The soulful food draws influence from Stewart’s southern heritage and family recipes, especially from his grandmother Jennie Ruth; and is available for lunch, dinner and Saturday brunch.

This restaurant and the food they serve are both absolutely wonderful!!! From the deviled eggs to the shrimp & grits, even down to the french fries and pickles, everything was excellent. The pimento cheese is a must try and the bread pudding is phenomenal. Southern food with a local uniqueness and flavor. The staff goes out of their way to ensure your meal is top notch. We will definitely be back.

“Soul food done new hippie style”
Reviewed February 1, 2013

Don't let the location fool you, this is good farm-to-fork food. Had to wait a little for a table, but had a good Ommegang Witte beer and Radler (Beer and lemonade - first place I've found it in a restuarant in SC) while we waited. For dinner we had the beet salad with goat cheese and pecans. Some of the best goat cheese we've had in a while and really paired well with the beets and candied pecans. Followed that up with the Braised Ossabaw Pork and Mushroom Ragout with Bertolini's Ricotta Gnocchi. Very good, fresh pork. For desert we spilt a piece of the pecan chocolate tart. I'm always a little worried that this kind of dish will be too heavy on the chocolate, but I'm glad to say this one wasn't.

This is a laid back place with a hippie vibe. Craft paper on the table with crayons to draw with, funky local art for sale. Just understand that and you'll leave happy.

“Not Good”

The Shrimp Po' Boy is basically fried popcorn shrimp on a roll. Shells & Cheese is melted Velvetta over pasta. All cafeteria style. Well, gave it try, back to Fuel!

“Good dinner”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

The outside, and to be certain, the inside of the restaurant do a disservice to the quality of the food here. It looks a bit warn and underdressed on the inside- the plastic glasses are chipped, the flat ware is indeed-flat. The food is DELICIOUS! I ordered a special which was a pork tenderloin (pig killed that morning according to the waitress) over sweet potatoes with a side of smashed potatoes. It was excellent. My husband had a salad which he said was also very good. Portion sizes weren't huge, but certainly enough to satisfy. This is a restaurant that seems to try to be different, organic, local- and specialty wines to boot. An unpolished gem.

“Charleston Marathon weekend”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

I had the pleasure of visiting with my daughter and two niece recently for lunch. I enjoyed two great crab cakes with some of the best tarter sauce i have every eaten(note nice dill flavor). Two of the ladies had shrimp Po boys and really enjoyed their sandwiches. The top entree of the table was the crispy chicken that we all sampled more than once. Luck for my niece she wasn't to hungry since we all eat half her meal. You order your meal as you enter and then they serve you at your table. Everyone was very helpful and very friendly. This is a must stop next time we visit.
