What we learned about these visits to plantations (this one as well as Monticello in Virginia) is that the tour guide makes the difference. If you can get one that can bring the place to life, then the visit is well worth the price. Otherwise, you're looking at stuff that's marginally interesting.
We chose Drayton Hall because the reviews for Magnolia Plantation made it seem like it was too "commercialized" and pricey. In hindsight, it might have been a better option.
