Owner description: Historic museum with displays of the War Between the States. The collection consists of Uniforms, Flags, Personal Items, Currency, Cannon, Swords, Guns.

The museum is located above the Charleston City Market, in a building dating from the 1800's. The displays are primarily in one large room, and memorabilia includes uniforms, letters, lithographs, and much more. The first Confederate national flag which flew over Fort Sumter is one of several on display.

Many of the items are souvenirs taken by soldiers and others and handed down for generations, which have been donated to the museum.

There is a very reasonable $5.00 charge per person (cash only). The hours are limited and the museum closes promptly at 3:30 p.m. You can probably go through in about thirty minutes, but it is better to plan for at least an hour and arrive early, so you can take your time and not miss anything.

I love this little museum, and I visit it every time I visit Charleston. It is owned and staffed by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, so it is a beloved memorial to their ancestors. What I like most is knowing that nearly all of the artifacts on display were donated by Confederate veterans, decades ago, and have never been "on the market." The Confederate Museum neither buys nor sells ... it preserves and cherishes. The little accompanying notes give interesting insights into Confederate items that you will never see anywhere else. The Confederate Museum is old-fashioned and low-tech, but its collection is truly priceless and its library is available to visitors. Keep up the good work, dear ladies of the UDC. Your great-grandfathers are proud of you and of what you do.

Room full of confederate items - that is it!
Don't expect to come out more educated or better informed about Confederate history. Probably interesting to Civil War buffs, but hardly anything had any meaning to me as unfortunately I have little prior knowledge of the events of te Civil War.

My husband was interested in visiting this museum and after reading some of the reviews I was a bit skeptical. As a history major though, I typically find these types of places very interesting - and I wasn't let down! There is so much to see in the one room museum. Well worth the $5 admission! They could easily fill three or four rooms with a typical museum set up. They women at the entrance were incredibly sweet and very informative. You could tell that they loved being there and just wanted to share everything with you! I was really impressed with the items they had on display. Uniforms bullet holes depicted, suitcases and travel gear, artifacts from battled. Some are not in "museum preserved" perfection, but that's what made this place so cool. You can imagine these items being in someone attic for a very long time before being put on display. If you've got an hour to spare (or even if you don't, make the time!) and visit this little gem right about the Market.

This is a one room display of various artifacts. Best suited for the true war history buffs and not really families. There is a vast collection, but there is no docent to walk you through telling stories and describing items. The ticket price was $8 per adult and $5 per child. It would be great to one day see these treasures located in a whole building that includes interactive displays and more background instead of just glass display cases. We stayed a little less than an hour. No photos allowed.
