Owner description: The Charleston Museum, America's First Museum, founded in 1773. Its mission is to preserve and interpret the cultural and natural history of Charleston and the South Carolina Lowcountry. We invite you to explore this rich, varied history at the Museum and its two National Historic Landmark houses. All are located downtown, in America's Most Historic City. Featuring: Lowcountry History, Historic Armory, Charleston in the Revolutionary War, "City Under Seige" (civil war), Natural History Hall, Kidstory, and Historic Textiles Gallery

The museum is laid out in such a way, you can easily follow the growth of Charleston from the 1600's forward. The videos are very good and give you and overview of the subject. The museum doesn't seem that large, but we were able to spend 3 hours easily. I do think that some of the stuffed animals from the old museum need to be replaced or removed; they are old and look moth eaten. More places to sit down would also be nice.

Seeing some of the exhibits from the original museum was most interesting... Sort of a cabinet of curiosities feel to that section. This is not a large museum, but has some interesting exhibits for Charleston history.

My husband I visited here on our honeymoon. We purchased a duo ticket that gave us admission to another museum too. We both really enjoyed the museum and learning about the local history.

Although the building itself isn't historic it has an interesting collection of historic artifacts. I wouldn't spend a lot of time here but it was a great introduction to Charleston and its history.

This museum was worth an afternoon visit. Great for local flavor and history, it even has a natural history portion showcasing animals from the area. The museum also has combination deals with several historical houses in the area. I recommend stopping by and checking it out. I personally enjoyed period clothing pieces they let you put on.
