Owner description: History comes alive as Colonial dressed guides talk about Pirates, Patriots and Presidents! Explore the location where pirates were once held and view a section of the 1698 fortification that once protected the Walled City. Completed in 1771 as the New Exchange and Customs House, recognized today as South Carolina's most historic building. Where Patriots were imprisoned, the Constitution was ratified and George Washington was entertained.

The docent was so knowledgeable. He kept our daughters entertained and educated all of us. The dungeon is more fun than scary.

I have become a little jaded about old buildings and guided tours, but decided to see one local building and go on the tour. This is well worth it. The guided tour covers the dungeon and then you are left to your own devices on the two upper floors. As a single stop this gives you a very good feel of the overall history of this beautiful and historic town.

Always a fun little stop for out of town guests. The best part is the museum area(s) upstairs- don't skimp out after the dungeon.

This museum had a great guided tour of the "dungeon" of the Old Exchange. There is also a small model showing the original boundaries of Charleston which was incredibly interesting and not something I saw anywhere else. The self-guided parts were somewhat sparse - there were some artifacts or articles of clothing that were interesting, however. We did get student ticket prices at $5.00 a person (this is not advertised, so make sure and ask), so I would definitely say it was worth it. Just to stand and think of all the history here is incredible.

This is great museum to learn about the early history of Charleston.

The first and second floors are self guided. George Washington visited here!

The dungeon is a guided tour. Our tour guide was very enthusiastic and presented the information very well. There are several rooms detailing the prison, pirates and the British occupation during the American Revolution.

It’s a nice museum and tour. Admission is 9.00. Highly recommended.
