“Sort of cheesy, has some cool history”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

The Old Exchange/Provost Dungeon is one of those places they always tell you to visit. It's honestly kind of cheesy, but you can see some interesting things. The costumes are pretty horribly inaccurate, and the tour actually includes animatronic pirates, but there is some cool history available, too. For example, you can actually see a piece of the original wall in the Dungeon's basement. In case you don't know, Charleston was the only walled city the English built in the North American mainland holdings. They captured a few others, but Charleston was the only walled city they constructed, and they did so out of fear of the Spanish. If you're looking for something to do inside, I suggest checking it out, but there are some outdoor attractions I'd stop by first!

Thanks for writing. I have flagged this review for Trip Advisor for the following reason: due to ongoing mechanical issues and a format change we have not run the animatronics displays in over a year and a half. Our tours have since this time been 100% led by costumed docents. We have no plans in the future to reactivate the animatronics. Your comments have led me to believe that your visit was from a much earlier time and does not reflect a current visit to our museum.

I'm not sure if you’re referring to the docents’ costumes or the animatronics costumes, but I'll address both. Some of our docents have purchased and wear their own costumes, and these individuals take pride in their accurate portrayal. We allow any time period that is relevant to our building, so allow them to dress from early Colonial up to WW II (we were the HQ of a local Coast Guard base from 1942-1947). Other docents are dressed in Old Exchange provided costumes. These outfits are period correct, and are either Colonial or Revolutionary period. We order these items from the same company Colonial Williamsburg uses for their outfitting needs.

Our animatronics, now used as static displays, were similarly costumed. That being said, we do have plans to update their wardrobe, and will strive to be correct in our choices!

We are glad that you enjoyed learning about the Walled City! Seeing that late 17th century brick fortification is a treat for those who enjoy history. It is the only place in Charleston that the public can see the wall exposed as it was. Thank you for your comments, and hope you will come back to see us again!!

Thank you for your review. Glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit. While we cover a lot of ground at the Old Exchange, we do focus on the Colonial and Revolutionary War period. Appreciate you coming & taking time to write!

“One of my favorite!!”

The Old Exchange and Provost was a great place to visit. I enjoyed the period costumed "greeters". The tour guide was delightful.. You could tell she knew her history and thoroughly enjoyed sharing with anyone who would listen. After the guided tour, you could tour two floors of artifacts, furniture, etc. Well worth the time.

Good to hear that you enjoyed your visit! Most of our docents are also licensed tour guides for the CIty of Charleston and have been part of the staff for years. We're all big history buffs at the Old Exchange! Thanks for your comments, safe travels!

“Unusual.”

We just happened to go by this sight and saw some young men dressed in colonial garb. We went in and took the tour. Proved to be very interesting. The guide talked about the early history of Charleston from being a port town to the pirates. Good tour.

Our museum does have a lot of different stories to tell, doesn't it? From the beginning of Charles Town, to trade and commerce, to Revolutionary War POW's, President Washington and the Constitution. It makes it a very unique building indeed! Thanks for visiting us and sharing your thoughts!

Best Regards!
