“Beautiful architecture and grounds”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2007

Even though I read the reviews and they were correct, the house is so beautiful from the outside that I just had to see the inside. The grounds are lovely and you can wander through them for free which I would highly recommend if you decide not to tour the house.

The architecture and the wood in this home is magnificent. The current owners "collection of stuff" distracted from the beauty of the home but my teenage sons thought it was "awesome." The tour guide was delightful and answered and asked questions. It is a little steep admission but what isn't steep in Charleston?

“Mutual feeling”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2007

After touring the gardens for free (exquisite) the four of us felt the house must be equally exquisite. We were wrong. While there were some beautiful pieces and interesting history attached to the tour/house, the problem(s) were everything was crammed into too few rooms, you were not allowed to look at your leisure or even remotely allowed to absorb anything because the guide had a script and had to get through the tour in 20 minutes. Also too much 'misplaced' art from the owner's collection seemed to scream that it didnt belong inside the walls of this statlye mansion. Having toured many historic homes all over, this was definitely NOT worth the $15.00 per person, especially when there are so many wonderful other sites in CHarleston to see that reflect the grandeur and history of this charming city.

“True Victorian style!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 13, 2006

My wife dragged me along to see the house. I am glad she did! The building is a must see for people who know anything about construction, the use of wood, restoration and more. We have a victorian home and it was great to see one so perfectly restored. The guide really knew alot about the history and he showed us a great time, telling us details of the place. Alot to look at!!

“Not Impressed”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2006

This beautiful house has been filled with tacky items that the current owners "collect". It is SO not worth the $15. The architecture is beautiful, but the best thing about the house is the gardens and the vestibule, and you can see those without paying a dime.

“Awful, Awful, Awful”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2006

The Calhoun Mansion is a waste of time and money. This was once a good tour, but the new owners have ruined the house. Most of the house is now off limits, yet the price has remained the same. The furnishings are innapropriate, tacky, and piled up all over the house. Our guide only knew a few snipets of history on the house, and seemed to think the highlight of the tour was that part of a movie was filmed there. She also spoke poorly of the other house museums and the passing carriage tours, showing particular venom for their guides. I found this to be very unprofessional and untrue as I enjoyed these activities in Charleston far more than the Calhoun Mansion tour. Save your money, take a carriage tour, or visit one of the other house museums. You'll be happy you did.
