“Very cool place!”
Reviewed July 23, 2014

I really liked this one! The house itself is only minimally tied to George Washington, but the really interesting history is in the family's story and the history of the house. I recommend it, and make sure you look outside in the back!

“Washington Slept Here”
Reviewed July 10, 2014

A great historical house tour. I was particularly amazed by the George Washington stories and the fact that he stayed in the house during a Presidential visit to Charleston.

“George Washington slept here!”
Reviewed July 10, 2014

I know.... apparently our first president slept in every town, and in every state; but the Heyward-Washington House has documentation to prove he stayed for a week! The tour guide was well informed, the house has many Charleston treasures. Well worth the admission price.

“Step into the past....”
Reviewed July 1, 2014

Since I am a member of the Charleston Museum, I get to visit the museum houses whenever I get the whim. The museum owns the Heyward-Washington house and the Joseph Manigault House. Both are worth the time to visit. The Heyward-Washington house is air-conditioned! The tour guide was pleasant, informative, and patient. She was one of the best I have encountered. I was able to park in front of the house and paid the parking meter for an hour. I was out in 45 minutes. T back yard/garden area was truly unique. out buildings included a large kitchen, out-house, cistern, and garden sheds. The garden was beautiful and is kept up by the Charleston Garden Society. They do a great job. The interior of the home is furnished with period pieces and paintings/portraits. The "finest piece of furniture made in America" is located here. Well worth the time. Go see it for yourself

“Parking is a problem.”
Reviewed June 30, 2014

The house is splendid and right next to the alley that was the inspiration for the opera "Porgy and Bess". But, like so much of Charleston nearby parking can become a nightmare. the tour guide we had knew the history of the house and was able to respond to any questions. And the interior of the house is wonderful. Get a Charleston Heritage Passport if you are going to spend two or more days in town, we saved well over $90 with a three day pass for the two of us.
