We purchased this as part of the Charleston Museum package. Like the Joseph Manigault house this one was furnished with period pieces from the museum and not the original furnishings. The house had been used for a variety of purposes over the years before being returned to a single family home. There is an 18th century formal garden that you can walk though after the house tour.

The house is interesting because of its history of its occupants but it is also a good example of Georgian layout and proportion. The kitchen and laundry house outside in the lovely garden is also very interesting. A spectacular book case took our breath away - beautiful and worth the entry fee on its own

A charming guide brought it all to life for us.

The house and grounds are exquisite. I loved that the guides were in period costume, the house was very well restored and the furniture was true to period, I also liked the lack of clutter in the home so your eye didn't have nausea from looking at everything. The kitchen in the rear assisted in your visualization of what it was like in the era pre a/c, etc. etc. etc. We were on a tour with just four of us which made it quite informative and non congested.

Only house we visited that allowed us to take photos with no flash inside. It is nice to see photos and remember the inside and outside of the house. Our tour was with a large group so it was hard to see everything. Wish they would let you go back and look at everything at your own pace. A lot of things had something you could read about it if you had time.

This home has seen a lot of history as it was the town home of Thomas Heyward, Jr. a signer of the Declaration of Independence. In addition George Washington rented the home during his 1791 visit to Charleston. Behind the house is a lovely garden, the privy, and a laundry/kitchen building (the only preserved kitchen from this time period in Charleston) which can be explored before or after the guided tour of the interior. Our guide was very enthusiastic and informative! We learned much about the history of the home and the antiques within. While the furnishings are not original to the home they are of the time period and most are Charleston-made. Several items in the home were featured on Antique Roadshow. I most enjoyed the Holmes bookshelf, the mislabeled statue of Ben Franklin, and the satirical engravings by William Hogarth.

Cameras are welcome but no flash!
