Owner description: The Foundation welcomes visitors to explore daily life in one of Charleston's most exquisite dwellings. Located in Downtown Charleston near High Battery, the Nathaniel Russell House Museum, 51 Meeting Street, is widely recognized as one of America's most important neoclassical dwellings. Historic Charleston Foundation purchased the National Historic Landmark in 1955, and the house served as the Foundation's headquarters for 37 years. Today, the interiors are restored to their original 1808 grandeur and surrounded by formal gardens.

The house and grounds are lovely, and the preservation and restoration efforts are significant and the foundation has gone to great expense and strides to recreate the home to its original grandeur, however not all the rooms are complete and there are few. I would like to go again in a few years when the efforts are completed. I could be a little jaded since I have toured a lot of historic homes in the South, so if you have not seen many, you may enjoy this more than I.

This is an amazing house...it has lots of special details and is very pretty... but you can't take pictures of any kind!

The Nathaniel Russell House is a beautiful historic home restored to its original grandeur. While the outside looks rather modest, the inside has been meticulously researched as to what the original period furnishings and the paint was even scientifically analyzed to determine the colors. The floating staircase is grand. The upstairs music room? was beautiful with the detail and colors. It’s too bad they did not restore the third floor. The tour is about 30 minutes with first come first serve basis. There is a tour about every 15-20 minutes.

Great historic house with wonderful docents. The staircase is amazing! Since it had rained a lot, the grounds did not receive the time they deserved.

I have gone through many historic homes and this one was average. I went to the Aiken Rhett home first and maybe that is why I was not as impressed with this one. The staircase is the obvious (and stunning) draw for the house. I guess I just did not care about who Nathaniel Russell was.
