Owner description: The Foundation welcomes visitors to explore daily life in one of Charleston's most exquisite dwellings. Located in Downtown Charleston near High Battery, the Nathaniel Russell House Museum, 51 Meeting Street, is widely recognized as one of America's most important neoclassical dwellings. Historic Charleston Foundation purchased the National Historic Landmark in 1955, and the house served as the Foundation's headquarters for 37 years. Today, the interiors are restored to their original 1808 grandeur and surrounded by formal gardens.

House re-opened the day of our tour after several months of renovations in preparation to close the famously free standing spiral staircase which is the crowning jewel of the home. Soon visitors will not be able to climb the stairs to tour the second floor as we did ( thus new stairs and routing of tours will happen soon) Hurry in to be the last public allowed. Kenneth was a great guide. Beautiful condition and furniture ( although not original). Grounds are also beautiful in the heart of downtown.

Lovely house in Charleston, full of furniture of the period. The staircase is amazing. Grounds are beautiful. Well worth the visit.

If you enjoy experiencing history through architecture, you won't want to miss the Nathaniel Russell house. The docents are well versed in the history of the home and its original occupants. Having visited the home twice, with more than a decade between visits, it is obvious that research into the home's original state and decor is ongoing and changes to the house are made to restore it to be consistent with the researcg findings. Although the footprint of the house and grounds is small, the gardens are lovely and should be explored before leaving the Nathaniel Russell house.

Beautifully restored Adam style house with a free-flying staircase that winds up three stories! ( The guide informed us that the staircase would soon be closed to visitors due to safety concerns.) well worth the admission fee.
