Owner description: The Foundation welcomes visitors to explore daily life in one of Charleston's most exquisite dwellings. Located in Downtown Charleston near High Battery, the Nathaniel Russell House Museum, 51 Meeting Street, is widely recognized as one of America's most important neoclassical dwellings. Historic Charleston Foundation purchased the National Historic Landmark in 1955, and the house served as the Foundation's headquarters for 37 years. Today, the interiors are restored to their original 1808 grandeur and surrounded by formal gardens.

“Great house museum”

This is a great house museum. We also had an exceptional guide - think his name was Edward - who really made a difference.

“restoration is nice, good history”

tour is conducted in a pretty stilted and elitist manner, making it difficult to feel comfortable asking questions and enjoying the tour

“Nice Historic House”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2012

We chose to visit one historic house in Charleston and enjoyed this Federalist style house. The guide was nice, but difficult to understand with her thick Charleston accent. I felt rushed on the tour.

“Worth your time to Visit.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2012

I love historic homes and loved this one, too. Very near the Charleston Museum and can do both in the same day. Very knowledgeable guides and some well done restoration...still has some more to be done.

“Just another old house”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2012

The most impressive thing about this house is the three story staircase, otherwise it is just another grand old house(?)
As with many of these types of tours, rooms or floor levels are closed off to the public. The tours also do not allow any pictures to be taken of the inside the houses. Overall, the house was interesting but considering it was only a 30 minute tour with limited access and their no photography policy, I felt ripped off!
