Owner description: The Aiken-Rhett House Museum, 48 Elizabeth Street, c. 1820, Is unique in many ways. For example, it remained in the hands of family descendents for 142 years until it was sold to The Charleston Museum and opened as a museum house in 1975. Historic Charleston Foundation purchased the house in 1995 and adopted a conservation approach to the interpretation of this important house and its outbuildings.

We decided to get Historical Architecture pass at the visitors center because I wanted to see some of Charleston's mansions - the only one NOT on this pass was the Edmonston Alston home. This one gave us a very thorough feel of a living quarters at the time. The others homes were good - but if time is limited this is the one to see.

This made it feel real instead of like a museum. Also, I wasn't overwhelmed with too many furnishings. I had never heard of an "urban plantation" before.

A real example of how old times were for the elite of Charleston on the mid Nineteenth century. You can appreciate the difference between the owners areas and the slaves and also between the slaves those that interacted iwth the owners and those that did not.

You won't want to miss this one. Fee is only $10 and is well worth it. You pay at the house and it is just minutes away from the Visitor's Center and The Charleston Museum. I had already toured most of the other historical homes on previous visits and feel this is a must see to get a legitimate feel for living life in Charleston in the early years. This was one of the best self guided (audio) tours in Charleston. The background music, sounds and voices are spot on. Unlike most of the historical houses in Charleston, this house is being preserved, giving visitors a view/feel of a few original pieces of furniture, examples of original wallpapers/paint, carriages, paintings/sculptures, etc. Spend the time and money -- you won't be disappointed.

We enjoyed the self 45 mins guided, audio tour. We could take our time and look at each of the sights. One can feel how grand this house must have been in it's time. It was a home and a lifestyle that was preserved. As you walk through this house, I felt like I was re-living history. The tour was very informative and a great way to get a sense of how one lived and lives in Charleston!
