Owner description: The Aiken-Rhett House Museum, 48 Elizabeth Street, c. 1820, Is unique in many ways. For example, it remained in the hands of family descendents for 142 years until it was sold to The Charleston Museum and opened as a museum house in 1975. Historic Charleston Foundation purchased the house in 1995 and adopted a conservation approach to the interpretation of this important house and its outbuildings.

“surprisingly interesting”
Reviewed July 5, 2013

I was nervous when I found out it would be an audio tour at my own pace rather than a docent led tour. But it worked out very well. The slave quarters are well worth a view and make this home a definite spot to visit.

“Nice way to spend an hour out of the heat”

This was a very interesting home tour. It is not reatored so you can see how time has changed it. Individual audio tour is very interesting. Strongly recommend

“Wonderful old house tour”
Reviewed July 4, 2013

As a frequent tourist to old houses, this one was very good. The headset was quite informative as were the docents. Parking was easy here right on the street next to the house. We made a mistake and did not allow enough time to do it all, so make sure you have a couple of hours to spend.

I loved it because it is a self guided tour so you can take your time and see everything. It is absolutely beautiful.

“A must see...”
Reviewed July 3, 2013

Wonderful tour - you receive a headset and walk along at your own pace. Their are guides around to answer your questions, they are extremely knowledgable. Very much enjoyed this tour of the home and slave quarters.
