Owner description: The Aiken-Rhett House Museum, 48 Elizabeth Street, c. 1820, Is unique in many ways. For example, it remained in the hands of family descendents for 142 years until it was sold to The Charleston Museum and opened as a museum house in 1975. Historic Charleston Foundation purchased the house in 1995 and adopted a conservation approach to the interpretation of this important house and its outbuildings.

This house is preserved not restored so what you see is what was there. It was very interesting however I would say that I prefer an actual guide to a headset and pre-recorded tape..

The house is beautiful from the outside.
It is to bad dat the house inside is in bad condition, it doesn't have to be completely restored but it needs a lot of work to get It in a better condition.
It is a self Guided tour which gives a lot of information.
It is to bad that you can't make pictures or film inside. You can only make pictures from the outside.
It was Nice to see but it could have been better when the house was better restored.

This was the best part of our trip for me... We were able to stroll through at our pace and look at things as long as wanted. The tour was very informative and detailed. The house was beautifully preserved in its time. It's just an awesome story.!

Great 45 minute audio tour of this house, including the slave quarters. This house is not restored, and you can understand its history and the history of the families who lived there from origins to modern day. No period furnishings -- just the rooms. The staff were helpful. Highly recommend a visit here to understand Charleston history.

This preserved - not restored - home was an exceptional visit. The decayed state of the house provided a totally different view of the lifecycle of a home rather than the typical restored to historical perfection showpieces. You could feel the "ghosts" of the past residences and events in every room.
