Owner description: Of Charleston's many fine house museums, only the Edmondston-Alston House (constructed in 1825 and enhanced in 1838) commands a magnificent view of Charleston Harbor. From its piazza, General P. T. Beauregard watched the fierce bombardment of Ft. Sumter on April 12, 1861, signaling the start of the Civil War. And on December 11 of the same year, the house gave refuge to General Robert E. Lee the night a wide-spreading fire threatened his safety in a Charleston hotel. Much like the Middleton Place House Museum, the collection at the Edmondston-Alston House Museum consists of pieces that belonged to the family, reflecting not only family history but American history. Despite the ravages of the Civil War, the Earthquake of 1886 and numerous hurricanes, the Alston family pieces remain in place much as they have for over 150 years. Notable in the collection is an original print of the Ordinance of Secession, portraits, dining room table, gas lights, mirror and exquisite interior woodwork.

“Nice, albeit short diversion”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2014

Docents were very friendly and their presentation was practiced. Very rich with history and replete with original furnishings and decor. We very much enjoyed the tour but the questions we asked regarding construction details and other things seemed to side-track and slightly fluster our guide. From a historical and architectural perspective, this is a real gem and the family is to be commended for keeping it up and opening it to tours. Leave your camera in your bag, photography inside the home is prohibited.

“Excellent Mansion Tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2014

This house has been owned by the same family for the past 200 years and has the original furniture and furnishings. Current owner lives in house on 3rd floor. Excellent tour of 2 floors and you get a real flavor of 1800's life. Can also rent the house for special occasions, or the staff building to stay in.
Owner must be a bit down on his luck because the building is not being maintained in tip top shape: downstairs fireplace has tiles that have pulled out from the wall and are ready to fall down, the veranda columns have wood rot and are in need of restoration and painting, etc.
