Edmondston-Alston House

Attraction details
Owner description: Of Charleston's many fine house museums, only the Edmondston-Alston House (constructed in 1825 and enhanced in 1838) commands a magnificent view of Charleston Harbor. From its piazza, General P. T. Beauregard watched the fierce bombardment of Ft. Sumter on April 12, 1861, signaling the start of the Civil War. And on December 11 of the same year, the house gave refuge to General Robert E. Lee the night a wide-spreading fire threatened his safety in a Charleston hotel. Much like the Middleton Place House Museum, the collection at the Edmondston-Alston House Museum consists of pieces that belonged to the family, reflecting not only family history but American history. Despite the ravages of the Civil War, the Earthquake of 1886 and numerous hurricanes, the Alston family pieces remain in place much as they have for over 150 years. Notable in the collection is an original print of the Ordinance of Secession, portraits, dining room table, gas lights, mirror and exquisite interior woodwork.

Liked the passion of the tour guide. Home large and furniture was perfect. The Alston name is mentioned everywhere we go, they and the Middletons. Well worth a visit.

We're glad you enjoyed the Edmondston-Alston House. We would only add the furnishings are not only authentic to the Antebellum period, 90% of the objects in the house belonged to the Alston Family, and are placed within the house as the Alstons had them. Thanks so much for the review.

“A must see!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2012

This home with it's location on the Battery is a must see. The million dollar views of the bay, Fort Sumter and the surrounding area are truly stunning from this homes piazza. The guided tour was done well and the home has some great interiors to view. And the breezes on a warm day were refreshing.

“Charleston history at it's finest”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2012

The property and the artifacts tell the story of old Charleston in a great tour. Our tour guide, Rosalea, did a great job of guiding us through the life of the previous owners and Charleston's history. She was well versed in the families that made this house a home. Time at the Edmondston-Alston House was well spent. This America's Castle is worth your time to see. Keep in mind that this is an old house and the tour includes the lower two floors as the current owners live on the third floor.
Our tour tickets were included in the price of our stay at the 21 East Battery Bed & Breakfast in the converted carriage house at the back of this property. Bundle your stay and live Charleston!

“Best View in Charleston”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

I missed the open hours for the Edmonston-Alston House on my last visit so I made sure I got there in plenty of time for this trip. I am so glad I did. The $12 ticket was money well spent. While there may not be many rooms the furniture and artifacts in the house are almost all original to the house and family, which has not been the case in many of the other tours I've done. The tour guide was exteremly knowledgeable about the house and the family history and had some really interesting stories and nuggets of information. How exciting to be in the very spot on the piazza where General P.G.T. Beauregard stood and watched the firing on Fort Sumter on April 12th 1861. That's a vantage point and view that is more than worth the trip.
