we were stabbing in Myrtle Beach for a golfing vacation and decided to take the day off and drive down to Charleston. It is a pleasant 2 hours drive. On the way you can see all the sweet grass basket stands in Mt. Pleasant along the highway. They still sell them that way. We found an easy and adequate parking garage nearby the City Market. We walked over there and wandered through about 3 blocks of vendors, many of them sweet grass basket weavers. The baskets are not inexpensive but beautiful. We also wandered over to the Belmont Charleston Place Hotel and saw the really neat miniature train set up in their lobby PLUS they have real Christmas set up throughout. Quite amazing in this day and age regarding fire safety.
All in all, it was a pleasant day. The City Market was ok nothing spectacular as it seems to cater to the cruise ships that come into port.
One visit was all I needed.

We stayed at a hotel near by and would walk though the Market daily. So we got to see the subtly changes day to day.

The smell of the horses was over powering. They stank.

The Market itself is filled with crafts people and souvenir vendors. Its really just one large tourist trap. If you looking for a key chain or a mug, well then yes, visit them. Otherwise, just keep on walking by and hold your nose.

Great tourist shopping area. Very neat place if you have never be into a city market. Lots of local crafts. Fun place to shop and eat.

Looks like this is designed to serve the crowds coming off the cruise ships and tour buses. Lots of "craft" and schlock - certainly nothing we needed to take home with us. Change the scenery and you could be at Rock City, Branson, Six Flags, South of the Border...

If you like arts and crafts or just shop you will like this place. There are many booths manned by local artists with wonderful and different items, The side streets are also filled with boutiques and restaurants. A great place to spend an hour or two
