Owner description: A popular tourist destination composed of 200-year old brick market buildings with shops and restaurants.

No doubt a tourist trap for over 200 years, but the six-block long Old CIty Market does have its limited charms, depending upon one's tolerance of overpriced Gullah baskets, local crafts and consignment junk and souveniers liberally mixed in. Saw more perusing by the tourists than actual sales, but a nice stop on a rainy day and it should be seen, at least once, for your total Charleston experience.

Took around 3 hours to look at all the goods inside the market and then to walk the streets on either side. Several nice artisans amongst some of the normal things you see at these type venues. The shops and restaurants around the perimeter seem to be mostly tourist traps, but it was a nice walk anyway. Got a good deal of unique items for Christmas gifts.

A very nice layout with only "good" type of things to offer. No trashy booths or goods. The people are friendly and the availability of various items is very nice. A good one stop place to shop.

It was easy to find and had lots of local artists work for sale as well as grass baskets and jewelry. Its definitely a tourist spot. A lot of items repeat themselves so look foe the best deal. I suggest a walk through before you make any purchases. I got a pendant and a local print for under $25.

We visited Charleston during the weekend of Hurricane Sandy. Although it could have been far worse, it was still a rainy day. There are some nice local crafts but watch out for the sweetgrass vendors. Their prices can vary a lot, and some are probably marking them up and then dickering prices if you show interest. Take a break at TBonz for a really good Bloody!!
