“Nice Location”

The location is the main thing this hotel has going for it. The staff was friendly. The elevators are terribly slow for a five floor hotel. The suite was a nice size for the age of the property in a historic district. The room was clean and ready when we checked in at 12:45 pm. Our suite had an adjoining door to another suite and wow was that a thin door. We heard a lot of noise whether it was the guest in the room or housekeeping. I don't think these were necessarily loud people, the door just did nothing to block the noise. Also, the on-site restaurant does not serve lunch. That would ordinarily have been fine but I had a business meeting that broke for lunch and it was raining. I would use this property again, but would feel better knowing a few of these things up front.

First, the good news: The Doubletree is well-located, which is the reason I selected it and it allows an easy navigation around the area. It's strength is its staff -- everyone was pleasant and very welcoming. The public areas were well-kept.

When I first saw my room, billed as "Deluxe, King" I was dismayed. In the room photos on the website, understand that where they show you the view of the bed, the photographer was literally standing against the wall to take the shot. The room size is about what I recall from the 1960's city hotels -- small and relatively cramped. There was a "sitting room" immediately inside the room door which is about the size of a large walk-in closet. The TV in that room didn't function. The bathroom is your typical shower/bathtub combo and about the size of any bathroom in a lower class motel. In my opinion, Doubletree needs to seriously renovate by taking 3 rooms and making them into 2 rooms -- each room should be at least half again larger.

We were out of the room from 7:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. In 8 1/2 hours, the maid service didn't manage to clean the room. The front desk finally sent someone when we requested a box of tissues.

This is a limited value, even at a so-called internet non-refundable, non-changeable price. Wi-Fi is offered nearly everywhere for free nowadays; not so at Doubletree. The same goes for breakfast -- I was very surprised that a breakfast "buffet" that was inferior to what some cheaper chains provide for free cost $29.90 for two, a fact that the dining room staff didn't mention before we sat down. Parking for 2 nights was an add-on, too. Frankly, you should hear a cash register in the background because Doubletree is tacking on charges for just about everything.

If I hadn't booked at the internet nonrefundable rates, I would have checked out and moved to one of the many other, far nicer hotels in the immediate area. The "special" rate isn't all that special when you add in all of the specialty charges that I just mentioned. It is far better to simply book a more expensive (to start) hotel with no add-in charges. Doubletree and Hilton should be ashamed.

Right in the center of the historic district. Couldn't ask for a better location in which to walk to the best restaurants, city market, and historical buildings. The staff was incredibly friendly to the extent that a housekeeper volunteered to fill our cooler with ice so we could take home a freshly caught fish. Would definitely recommend and return.

Overall it's a pleasant enough hotel in a great location. Aside from the decor (the drapes were easily the ugliest I've seen in my life, I mean, distractingly hideous), the room was relatively comfortable and spacious. It's always nice to have the half kitchen. Breakfast was great. There were no wow moments, but I'd stay here again if the rate were right.

After a week of traveling we decided to splurge and stay at the Doubletree in the heart of the Historic District in downtown Charleston. We had recently stayed at a Doubletree in Fayetteville NC and were more than pleased so we expected the same wonderful experience. We started off great. The young man who took our bags, registered our car for valet parking, and brought us to our room was pleasant and helpful with dining suggestions as well. Things went down hill from here. At registration we were assigned a first floor room, we requested a QUIET room on an upper floor and were reassigned a room on the second floor (hotel has 5 floors). We were also told if we decided to leave early (reservation was for 2 nights) we would be charged 50% for doing so. Maybe this was an omen? Our quiet room was anything but, with people talking outside on the street our room at 10:30 and again at midnight, the street cleaner sweeping the street outside during the night and at 7AM the septic truck pumping outside our window, and a trash truck at 8:15. So much for a decent nights sleep.
To add insult to injury, we asked to upgrade our reservation to include the breakfast package. Since we booked on line the upgrade price on the website was $20.00 for two and the hotel was $30.00 for two. We asked if they would honor their web price and when the receptionist asked the manager, Mr Valentine, if she could do this his answer was, " No, they should have done it when they booked the reservation on line". Not the greatest customer service. We decided to eat elsewhere.
The hotel is clean and nicely appointed, however the management needs some lessons in customer relations.

Our front office goes through a lengthy process each day to try to accommodate all reservations but occasionally can’t due to extenuating circumstances. I wish that we had been notified before-hand of extensive renovation on our floor. I think our room, and our Mother's room were the only two rooms not being painted or carpet changed. Our room smelled strongly of paint, and I think ours had just been finished a day or so prior to our arrival. It was impossible to wheel our luggage for us (2 adults, and 3 young kids) because of the furniture piled in the hallway, carts full of paint (which I was sure my kids would knock over), etc. Looking back, I wish that I had complained a little stronger at the front desk, as the price we paid was so very much higher than the quality of our stay. Also, you can unload your bags and family, then park your car at a 24h parking garage just down the block. It's a little inconvenient, but would have saved us a little had we known. Call the hotel to see if they are renovating any of their rooms, and if so, be sure to stay on an already updated floor.

The accomodations were very good. Immaculate room and bath. Breakfast had good variety. Very courteous staff. The best in room coffee we've had in years. Walking distance to restaurants, sightseeing. Valet parking is a plus and at a minimal charge for the convenience.

Room Tip: If you are traveling with kids, get a suite. Good value
